1. Not by a long shot
Let's see how many Republicans want to stand up in an election year and say they want loonies and criminals to be able to get their twitchy hands on assault weapons.

8. How many Dems...
...lost their seats when they pushed for the ban the first time around? I think if it were an issue they thought would help them, Dems would be fighting for gun control much harder than they are.

15. Show us all the mentions of assault weapons in the Contract on America
There was no popular outburst against the AWB...what happened was that the gun lobby funneled millions to the GOP.

"I think if it were an issue they thought would help them, Dems would be fighting for gun control much harder than they are. "
I think with a quagmire in Iraq, a complete disaster in foreign policy, and three million jobs lost, there are more important issues for everyone else to face. The only folks who want to get rid of the ban are a handful of fanatics and the corrupt gun industry.

16. Non sequitur
The "Contract on America" was written by Newt Gingrich and his gaggle of conservatives.

I know there was a popular outburst against the AWB - I participated in it at the time and continue to do so to this day.

11. Ban ALL semi-autos...
...so that the loonies and criminals will never lay their hands on these killing machines.

13. This is just idle speculation

But I think idadem is being sarcastic to make the point that criminals will always be able to get guns despite any kind of firearms prohibition laws.

BTW, welcome to the Gungeon idadem. :toast:

Not content with a renewal of the existing ban, (see http://www.vpc.org/graphics/awbackground.pdf and http://www.vpc.org/graphics/renewal.pdf), pressure groups will shoot themselves in the foot by pushing for something stricter like HR 2038, which covers so many more firearms than the existing AWB it will energize the vocal and effective gun lobby to kill it. Most likely all bills will die in committee.

And Bush said he'd sign a renewal the existing ban, but he's never said he would go for something stricter. There isn't support in the House of Representatives for even a renewal of the present innefective, pointless ban.

The existing ban will die on schedule.

I have to hand it to the Violence Policy Center. They very clearly understand the ineffectiveness of the present AWB.

5. I was asking for a practical appraisal
of how and when the AW ban renewal might resurface?

Of course, even if the AW ban gets out of the Senate, it will never get out of the House, at least with Tom Delay as Majority Leader.

I'm a DOCTOR not a prognosticator...

And when it expires there will be thousands of new prebans!! actualy there won't be any bans, which means if they create a new law all weapons made and configured as Assualt weapons before the bill will be grandfatered!!! thats why im stocking up on AR15 receivers because after sep I will be able to add any features I want!!

17. It won't be renewed any time soon.
Thank God the Authoritarian anti-freedom crowd like Feinswine and DeSwine were defeated. I hope they lose their jobs to liberty-lovers.
