VIDEO: CCW holder defends self against two attackers.

Dayton Police say a man who was being robbed at a local gas
station turned the table on his attackers, shooting one of them.
It happened late Friday, June 17 at the Sunoco station at Wayne Av. and
Keowee St. Watch the surveillance video as the “victim”defends himself
against the two guys who investigators say were attempting to rob him.

I am sure that the CCW holder had no idea that he would be assaulted that night. Like most of us that carry, he likely carries just in case something happens. Then trouble came to call and he was ready.

1. Shoots him and drives a way. Nice.
No problem with the self defense. But that is the ccw equivalent of hit and run.

Even cops are required to render first aid after shooting someone.

2. He is not a cop. Further,
Edited on Thu Jun-23-11 08:20 AM by DWC
you don't see any cops around defending the man against the assault. How well would your brains be working the few seconds after having to shoot another human being in defense of your life?

You never know when.

You never know where.

Semper Fi,

3. No, he left the scene to end the conflict, then apparently contacted the police and cooperated fully
Or else the detailed description of the incident wouldn't be on the news, eh?

4. Exactly the right thing to do.
The last thing you want to do is for his un-harmed criminal friend to hop on his cell phone and round up his posse to come even the score.

I would have gotten the hell out of there, too, and called 911. Let them deal with it.

Not to mention the fact that if you just tried to harm me I'm not sure I'm a magnanimous enough person to try and help you after you forced me to shoot you.

8. Like the proverbial " Wouldnt piss down your throat if your guts were on fire "?
I always figured you could "try" and piss down their throat only to miss repeatedly , by "that much" .

And it really does seem subject to the situation at hand .What if you had crushed an attackers larynx ? Would you not proffer advise on performing a self tracheotomy as they flopped around , gacking , and turning blue ? I would likely even loan them my knife and a ball point pen as I'm compassionate to a fault sometimes .

12. He escaped and called the police.
He had just been attacked by two strangers. He had no idea if there were more attackers who were going to get involved. Maybe some gangmember would start shooting at him. The correct tactical move after the shooting was to escape to safety and call police.

23. Nope
Leaving the situation was the prudent thing to do. The second guy (and how did the victim know there might not be even more inside) is still a potential threat. Staying on the scene only makes further confrontation and violence more likely. I would have driven off and immediately called 911 and explained the situation, then called the cops to ask what they would want me to do. After calling my lawyer.

27. Can't respond to all - but on consideration I probably would have left the scene
and called the cops from a safe distance as well.

5. He stopped the aggression and broke off the contact.
Using the car to flee the area was the right thing to do. It's not like he was going to be able to arrest them. And furthermore the shooter had no idea if there were two, three, or ten people in on the attempted robbery. That was good thinking on the shooter's part.

10. So, you'd rather live in a world where that woman didn't get shot in the leg...
...and the guy in the video in the OP got beaten and robbed, possibly killed.

15. Yes it does and I'm all for training,
However, accidents happen to the best trained also. In fact they happen at training sessions and to seasoned safety trainers.

Cross fire is a great danger and is a good reason to limit handguns in crowded venues like sports stadiums and crowed bars. When people are in close proximity, it is safer to disarm a shooter by mobbing him than shooting at him. Fewer people are likely to get shot.

18. I'm sure that you can provide a whole laundry list of "crossfire" incidents involving legal carriers
Except that it doesn't seem to happen, primarily because despite the perception some people promote, most people legally carrying concealed are not trigger-happy sociopaths looking for any excuse to start shooting.

20. who is to say that a carrier in that
situation would not have done that? I remember reading that one of the guys that tackled Jared L. was carrying (not to be confused with the guy that ran over from across the street)
You are assuming that someone would draw and shoot while standing next to the bad guy.

26. Its not an anecdotal war.
Its a concerted effort to marginalize, attatch negative stigma, and positively bury anything what so ever positive, relating to gun usage/ownership/rights, on the part of certain posters, masked AS an anecdotal war.

And a desperate effort to bury and or discredit anything and everything gunwalker, that goes far beyond right vs left ideological bickering.

Think about that for a minute and ask yourself why.

The amount of time and effort expended both here on DU and in the MSM where marginalizing/spinning/discrediting anything gunwalker is concerned, illustrates the value the antis place on ATF. And it indicates a level of value far FAR higher than simply guncops.

Ponder that, every time you see them at work, trying to marginalize/spin/discredit it.

Theres far more than meets the eye to this.

Much MUCH more.

Hoyt school of proper CHL etiquette.. Dodge and shoot, use a full auto for a CHL weapon, wear the proper "cowboy" clothing, stay and repeatedly shoot the perp as he lays there, accidentally shoot everybody within 200yds, shoot himself in the foot/hand/crotch ect..
