Teens brought gun to fistfight, killed SMN student
http://www.shawneedispatch.com/news/2011/jun/29/teens-brought-gun-fistfight-killed-smn-student/

Ryder Spillman walked to the school playground, alone and raring to fight. Shane Reed handed his cousin Stephen Reed a pistol, and Stephen pulled the trigger.

No one disputed those points last week during a hearing in the murder case of 16-year-old Spillman, a Shawnee Mission North High School student and avid skateboarder. But other details presented will factor into whether the Reeds will be tried as juveniles or adults — something they must wait longer to find out.

Wyandotte County juvenile court Judge Wes Griffin said he needed more time, probably until sometime this week, to review information from hours of testimony and newly presented documents.

“This decision will not be made today,” the judge said. “This is very, very serious, and I have taken it that way.”

3. Because sometimes bad things happen.
People like yourself just don't seem to understand that and think we need to legislate ourselves into a padded room for the "good" of everybody. It doesn't matter that no actual good comes from it, but it makes you "feel" better.

6. I'm sure they don't.
In fact, I would expect little else from them. But a rational society does not base its laws only on the feelings of those who have experienced bad things in life. Would you suggest we allow victims of crimes to determine their attackers punishment after the attacker was convicted of the crime? Or would you agree that calmer, more rational heads should prevail?

2. So was Stephen just supposed to take his ass-whippin'?
The "victim" was "raring to fight?" Looks to me like he started it, and Stephen finished it.

8. Is that what it looks like to you?
I'm not so sure. I wasn't there, and the story doesn't really provide adequate information. I think I'll wait until I have more facts.

7. Hey. If the gangbangers haven't been convicted of a crime,
they have the same right to keep and bear arms as you do, right? They're just exercising their 2nd Amendment rights, right?

Uff da!

9. Given their ages, no.
Unless I missed something, all of these kids were under the age of 18, and I do believe in most states that would preclude them from carrying a firearm legally outside of certain specific situations.

I think it is helpful at times to respond to sarcasm in a serious manner...

18. Yes, and your sarcasm had a specific point...
...that was subsequently refuted.

I get the feeling that a lot of people here really don't understand what "sarcasm" means.

16. More blood dancing
Here we have two sets of gang banger teens who travel to the next county with illegal guns and commit murder. What is the message? It is illegal for them to have guns, so it cannot be that. Apparently the shooter was on probation and was a know bad acter. Maybe lenient courts are the problem.
