Detained Mexico crime boss details US gun smuggling
http://www.timesofoman.com/innercat.asp?detail=47327

Mexico: Captured Mexican crime boss said his gang purchased weapons in the United States and smuggled them across the Rio Grande river, according to testimony released Tuesday by Mexican authorities.

Jesus Enrique Rejon Aguilar, one of the founders and leaders of the feared Zetas drug cartel, said smugglers began transporting the weapons across the river following increased security at international crossings.

"All the arms are bought in the United States... Before we would transport them over the bridges, but now we transport them across the river, with difficulty," he said, according to the public security ministry.

The Rio Grande -- known as the Rio Bravo del Norte in Mexico -- forms the 1,200-mile (2,000 kilometer) border between Mexico and the US state of Texas.

1. Yeah, Mexican crime boss is an unimpeachable source all right ...
Ah, they weren't using the bridges. Those sneaky bastards! No wonder the ATF lost track of the guns.

2. so factcheck.org and stratfor.com are NRA chumps
and this guy is an honest broker. Sure, and the Mexican officials quoted care more about the truth than exposing problems in their own government. Yes, I intentionally wrote it that way. OK.

14. And Brady and VPC are the paragons of integrity
and Rachel Maddow was not against Bush's watch list before she was for it; Al Qaida was correct when they said you can buy a machine gun at Walmart without a background check; and Wikileaks, Stratfor.com, factcheck.org and Latin American Herald are NRA and GOP. Before you know it, the Koch brothers will be supporting clean energy. :sarcasm:

6. I like the story
About how the government allowed paid informants to make straw purchases and then cut off all surveillance of those weapons as they were taken into Mexico. But you don't want to talk about that do you? It's all about the evil American firearms owners.

9. Captain amazing strikes again
Edited on Wed Jul-06-11 02:06 PM by Abq_Sarah
I guess you never considered how many of those purchases went through because our government wanted those cartels to have the firearms and ordered FFLs to complete what they knew to be straw purchases.

Don't bother to respond, we all know you don't want to discuss that. It's all about the evil gunz.

10. Logistics
Without a doubt, the US is A source for arms in Mexico, infact it has been since before Mexico was born. But the US is but one source and the known numbers show it to be one of the smaller ones.

I have not seen any claims that NO firearms from US commerical sources end up in the hands of criminals in Mexico, I have seen many claims that have subsequently been backed up by facts, that the amount of guns recovered in Mexico attributed to US gun shows was VASTLY overblown.

And if you actually read the drug dealers statement, he is saying it was the USGOV that supplied them at times....and according to acting ATF Director Melson, he is right...
