State Rep. Karen May, D-58th, continued her series of town hall meetings Saturday at the Highland Park Police Station; however, her agenda to discuss energy issues and her recent legislative successes shifted abruptly to conceal-and-carry gun laws.

What sparked the topic change was May’s vote earlier this year against a state House proposal that would have granted gun owners the right to carry firearms on their bodies.

She added, however, that the gun-rights lobby is distorting her position. May supports the Second Amendment, but she explained that the recent conceal-carry proposal is flawed because it fails to provide mental health precautions.

“I am positively representing my district ... I’ve walked almost all of the towns in the district, I am out at coffee shops and farmers markets, they tell me my district does not support conceal carry,” May said.

1. The fundamental problem with those kinds of meetings...

...on both sides of the aisle, is that the people in attendance are usually there as supporters of the representative, and are thus more likely to be of his or her political persuasion.

It's the same thing where Repubelicans can keep saying "the people don't want Medicare for all"...


That and the money the insurance companies throw at them.

2. A little constructive criticism then perhaps...

...get off your ass and introduce an amended proposal that addresses your concerns with mental health precautions. If you're a bastion of 2A goodness, then do your job and deal with the alleged problem. She's not genuine on her 2A support in this issue and people can tell. She deserves what she gets.

It's time to let freedom spread, allowing people the right to defend themselves should be job one.

4. I know this woman - she's a fraud and a Daley meat puppet

She keeps saying that she "supports the second amendment" and talks about "growing up downstate where her father and brothers hunted" ... except ... she has voted for every Daley sponsored gun control law that hit the legislature floor. She has a 100% anti gun voting record.

She tried to shut the meeting off from anyone not screened by her staff, who were checking IDs at the door until the police informed them that she was using a public building and they could not discriminate on who attended a pubic meeting in a public building. At that point it became a real opne meeting.

She actually trotted out every phony stereotype; "wild west", "shootings over small arguments", "Increased violence with all those guns on the street" etc.

She supports the 2nd like Brady supports it.

When she was asked why 48 other states passed the came CCW laws and don't seem to have any of the problems she described she said "well Illinois is different" and ended the meeting.

There are already plans and funds being gathered to primary her in the next cycle. She is one of six or seven votes being targeted to replacement in the next election cycle.

7. Do you keep

A fire extinguisher in your house and car?

Do you keep a first aid kit in your house and car?

Even if you don't, you have to admit it's a good idea to be prepared, just in case.

You may never need to use either, but then again they may save your life, or the life of someone else.

Most people who carry a firearm will never need to use it. But then again, it might just save their life one day.

Look, I get it. There is no instance where you think using a gun is justified. Criminals however don't share your dislike of violence unfortunately.

People who are afraid of fire still have their houses burn down. People who don't like blood still need bandaids. People who don't want to be a victim of someone's wrong doing need to be able to protect themselves.

Why let criminals take charge of your life when they choose?

6. She's being misleading

Its been a few years since I lived there, but I recall a mental health precaution in the FOID card issuance stage of gun-ownership.

Including a precaution in a CCW bill wouldn't be necessary, because without a FOID, its illegal to be in possession of a firearm.


And really, if her problem with the bill was it lacked that redundant precaution, she could have fought for an amendment.

You can disagree with more liberal gun laws but you really need to reflect on what it means to be a liberal.
