4-year-old killed by gun shot

PHILADELPHIA, July 15 (UPI) -- A 4-year-old boy died less than an hour after he was shot in the head Thursday inside a Philadelphia home, police said.

Officers responding to an emergency call in the city's Kensington neighborhood found Javier Merle Jr. at about 4:30 p.m. EDT, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported. Javier was pronounced dead just after 5 p.m. at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children.

At least three adults were in the house at the time but investigators could not determine what happened.

"All we know is that the child was in fact shot one time in the head. We do not know what type of weapon it was at this point, because at this point the weapon is not recovered," he said. "We do not know how the shooting occurred. We don't know if it was intentional. We don't know if it was accidental. We don't know the circumstances of how and why this child was shot."
