9. "True" family story:

My dad once told me of a shooting in my family.
It was probably 1920ish on the farm in Erath County, TX. It seems my grandfather was laying for a rabbit that had been helping itself to lettuce from the garden in the back yard. The rabbit appeared and grandpa took a bead on it down the side of the house and fired his shotgun - just as my grandmother stepped out of the back door.

Apparently it was the talk of the town for a while, and Mamma - again, according to my dad's account - had buckshot pellets in her leg the day she died (on her 90th birthday)

When I was 16 I worked at a veterinary clinic. Somtimes I got to stand by in surgery. One Saturday afternoon two young kids came in carrying their english sheepdog mix. The dog had a about 2 1/2 - 3 inches in its side, a lot of powder burns , etc.

It was really heartrending and maddening that somebody could do this sort of thing.

The Drs. were able to save the dog.

We let the perpetrator know that this better not happen again; his family took care of things as a result: disarmed the senile old pecker.
