7. Do what?
When I was a kid, my mom and older brothers taught me how to shoot with an eight shot revolver (.22LR) my brother bought in a gun shop in Hamburg (then West Germany).

14. So kitchen knives are right out, then?
and i don't think it should be legal to make a weapon that can do that.

Summer 2010, China.. 100 wounded, 20 dead (that the state will admit to..)

Of course not all in one attack, but the point stands.

Or..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Happy_Land_fire

Let's outlaw plastic containers of gas and a couple of matches.

Or..

Let's outlaw cars..

http://www.theepochtimes.com/n2/content/view/16160/

Face it, when an asshole, evil fuck, or mentally deranged person decide to kill lots of people, there'll always be a way. Whether that's a kitchen knife at an elementary school, a can of gas at a crowded night club, or a car aimed at a crowd watching an event.

3. a sub-machine gun and a pistol, but found no specifics
How do you know that he is right wing? In case you are too young to remember the 1970s-1980s, Europe had a problem with left wing terrorists. They get the Lefties and we get the right wingers.
Can't find anything about specific makes and models. Why do you ask? Other than being appalled, I'll have to wait to see what details show up.

Please keep posting. You make the NRA look rationale and appealing.

This is a horrific event whose magnitude was ensured by the damned gun--whatever type it was. Yes, of course, there are lots of ways to kill-even lots of people, but scarcely any so efficient as what this guy brought to bear.

Tragic beyond words....

13. Pistol and other weapons.
CNN reports a pistol and an "automatic weapon", but I am hearing other reports of other weapons as well.

This tragedy shows what happens when you have an isolated group of unarmed people at the mercy of a dedicated murderer.

These poor people, many of them kids, were picked off one by one. Reports are that the shooter called to the kids, saying he was the police, and as they came out of hiding he shot them down.

Reports are that some of the kids drowned trying to swim away from the island they were trapped on.

Hundreds of people with no way to resist a single man. No way to fight back. It wasn't until the police showed up with guns that the shooter gave up.

This is what gun control gives you. A defenseless population at the mercy of any violent criminal.

Killed by disarmament laws....

I guess the "leave it to the police" argument is less credible then ever.

20. This is what happens in a no gun zone. The only one with a gun was the bad guy
80 dead because no one else was allowed to carry a gun and the sub machine gun he had was already banned showing that when weapons are banned and someone wants to do a mass shooting, they will get the gun to do it.

This peace of shit should have been shot in the balls repeatedly by an armed citizen right after he started shooting. He should not have been the only armed person on that island.

21. Grave dancing before rigor mortis has even set in. Nice.
Of course, with so many facts yet to be reported, and being a different set of laws, using this incident as a 2A or CCW arguing point in the United States is reckless conjecture. Until all the facts are known, it is irresponsible to draw any parallels.

I don't know much about Norway's laws. I do know they have pretty strict gun control - registration, must show need, limits on types and amounts owned. Most civilian firearms are hunting and sporting rifles and shotguns. But I do not know what firearms were used. And that's a big point, because there's several legal zones that gun laws can place a firearm into: Illegal for all, highly regulated and legal for a qualified few but not him, or legal for him.

I also know they have good access to mental health care, but whether or not this individual had a recorded history that would have prevented him from acquiring firearms I do not know.

Yes, a gun was involved in this horrible act. But its the act of a madman, plain and simple. Making an argument one way or another at this point is disingenuous.

Mitt hjerte går ut til de berørte i Oslo. En forferdelig tragedie.

I very much agree, but in general such events are the work of a madman, whether it happens somewhere with permissive or restrictive gun laws.

Usually in the aftermath of such events, there's a piling on of "See, see, see, we need to ban guns" before any details are known.

Pretty horrifying story, particuarly as some reports saying 87 dead yet still say the death toll could continue to rise.

23. car bomb and sub-machine gun, not a hunter or target shooter gone off the deep end
In terms of percentage of gun owning households, they are second behind us (we are second behind Finland). Their "need" includes hunting, target shooting etc. Self defense, less than of a need since they have less crime than Japan and the cops don't carry for the most part. Only collectors may own machine guns, if that is what they specialize in.

A closer parallel would be with the UK, where many gun crimes involve machine guns.

40. Some additional "thoughts"...
jpak is one of a long line of "anti-gun" posters who fill up the forum with "incidents" of shootings (often miss-edited) as a means of starting a "discussion" wherein he accuses fellow progressive DU members of being NRA apologists, right-wing supporters and GOP-backers. Like most of these others, he is not really serious about the issue; if he could do the same in the "sports" or "camping" sections, he would. But he does it here, using the same old technique. He isn't serious about gun-control, he is serious about getting a lot of attention by disrupting. Personally, I think these folks probably go to some other web sites and brag to other folks about how much disruption and punking they did; you know, like scrawling naughty words on bathroom walls.

Ask him if he's serious. Ask him to explain in detail his proposals, and further, how such would effect a positive outcome. You'll find out quickly that YOU will become the brunt of his electro-graffiti. Common, oft-repeated stuff. (I sometimes wonder if the same person pumps this bilge under different names!)
