2. I thought Texas' open carry law would prevent these sorts of tragedies
Surely the gun rights advocates couldn't be wrong about this could they?

you'd know Texas isn't an open-carry state. So really you thought wrong, not the gun rights folks.

35. the problem is not open carry
the problem is dangerous people who abuse their wives with guns. It wouldn't take much to improve on the shitty screening and controlling we do now with domestic abusers.

5. Open carry was banned in Texas since
about the late 19th century (but was selectively enforced like Florida). If it happened in Vermont or Wyoming, you might have half a point.

20. I thought making murder illegal would prevent these sorts of tragedies
Sentences of 20 to life don't seem to be enough to stop murder, maybe making guns illegal too will have the desired effect. /sarc

8. False equivalency, bucko.
I chastised him for pretending he gave a shit. He posted this treacly garbage along with his grave-robbing:

"Note: My heart aches for the victims and families... as I do whenever a tragedy strikes ANY person."

Anecdotal data to reach a conclusion: both posts have that. Posting about tragedy to make a political point: both posts have that. Hypocritical bullshit, saccharine smiles, pretending to be a caring person: only one has that, and that's what I condemned.

31. Why would anybody scold MyrnaLoy over this post?
It was an informative post referencing a recent event, with no personal interjections or snarkiness that I saw.

You should have noticed that I don't agree with MyrnaLoy on most aspects of 2A and gun control, and we have gone at each other in the past. However, this post doesn't merit disapproval or censure.

23. There's a huge amount of grave-dancing going on here about Norwegian gunman...
...and the Scandinavian states' tight gun regulation; have
you complained in those threads too or is your outrage
selective?

I think every gun-related death in this country ought to
be posted in this forum. I think gun proponents should
be confronted with the ghosts of every single person that
their favorite weapons have caused the death of in this
entire country.

28. Good idea.
As long as you post every single use of a gun for self defense.

Maybe a confrontation with the ghosts of people who died because of arrogant elitist ideology would be instructive as well.

36. Strictly speaking, "family" singular
From the article:
Relatives were celebrating a child's birthday Saturday night at a skating rink <...> the rink was not open to the public because the family had rented it for several hours for the private party <...>

I think the chances are better than average that this incident was the culmination of a dispute that had been brewing for months, possibly years, and that the shooter didn't "just happen" to have the gun on him.

And given that both my wife and I consistently vote Democrat, you'd think it'd be in their interest to facilitate my committing a murder-suicide, thereby eliminating two votes for the opposing party.

39. The killer had a previous arrest for domestic violence and a restaining order previously on him.
It was illegal for him to own a gun. Looks like he didn't pay much attention to the law.

Because a criminal does criminal things with a gun is no reason to take my guns away from me.

40. Was the restraining order still in force?
It wouldn't be illegal for him to possess a firearm on the basis of having been arrested, but not convicted, of a domestic violence offense, and if the restraining order was no longer in force, he would be under no prohibition either.

However, this does support my surmise in post #36 that this shooting didn't occur "out of the blue," but had some history leading up to it.

41. The RO had been lifted.
Three different times he had beat her and threatened her. In one instance he locked her in a closet and fired a shot over her head. http://abcnews.go.com/US/boys-birthday-party-turned-massacre-estranged-husband/story?id=14152845

The woman had withdrawn her filing for divorce and lifted the RO. Sadly that is common in domestic abuse cases. He had no prior convictions.
