Updated: Alaska-bound travelers charged by Canada with gun smuggling
The Vancouver Sun reported today that Barr, a Californian, and Cross, a Texan, were traveling to Alaska on vacation with their wives in a motor home. They spent five days in jail before posting $50,000 bail each.

Vancouver lawyer Joel Whysall, who represents the pair, said the men are both retired and have no criminal records.

"These are people who have never been in trouble in their lives and they spent five days in the North Surrey Pre-Trial Centre with hardened criminals and drug addicts," Whysall said.

"They were completely besides themselves and it took their wives five days to raise bail to get them out."

2. It will be an expensive one for them.
I hope they had a nice going away party for all their belongings.

3. This was pure stupidity on these people's part
No excuses, age included. If you're an American, and traveling into Canada, Mexico or any other country, you have a responsibility to know and obey the laws.

5. uh oh
A rather important bit here:
Whysall did not offer an explanation of why the men lied to border guards about the weapons they were carrying, as Canadian authorities allege.

Next time, take a plane, and try lying to your own airport authorities, boyz.

What they had:

http://www.vancouversun.com/news/Eleven+illegal+weapons+seized+border+crossings+last+week/5132131/story.html
July 11: An officer at the Aldergrove border crossing seized five loaded handguns and a loaded shotgun from two U.S. men who were heading to Alaska.

The travellers, Hugh Wayne Barr and Danny Ray Cross, did not declare any firearms during the primary examination, but the weapons were discovered in the vehicle during a secondary examination.

That article details incidents involving several other hapless gun smugglers last week.

10. Jeez, it hurts to do this...
But iverglass is right. If you lie to authorities you have screwed up and deserve what you get. No sympathy at all from me.

iverglass and I are in agreement - that movement you are feeling is the earth tilting on its axis...

6. You're not a "law-abiding citizen" if you're contemptuous of the law.

They deserve everything the authorities can throw at them.

The link says a simple form would have allowed a legal import, prevented any offence from occuring and allowed non-legal arms to be reclaimed and taken home later:

"Visitors may temporarily import non-restricted firearms, such as common hunting rifles and shotguns, if they complete the non-resident firearm declaration and if they a valid purpose (hunting, target shooting, for protection from wild animals in remote areas where firearms are allowed).

For information on importing a firearm, visit: http://www.cfc-cafc.gc.ca/factsheets/visitin_e.asp.
U.S. visitors to Canada should also ensure they comply with Canadian regulations concerning the safe transportation of firearms.

As well, many weapons are considered prohibited and therefore not allowed in Canada.

Travellers who have fully declared prohibited weapons or firearms, but don't have the required license or permit to import them into Canada, will not have their goods seized, and have the option to have CBSA hold the weapons until the required permits and licences are obtained, abandoning the goods to the Crown or appealing the prohibited classification."
