Cuomo signs law aimed at domestic violence, guns
http://online.wsj.com/article/APccbf89ecc5de491f858f201dc025b9ac.html#articleTabs%3Darticle

ALBANY, N.Y. — A new law bars those convicted of misdemeanors in domestic violence cases from buying firearms.

Felons are already barred from buying pistols, rifles, guns and other firearms.

Federal law prohibits gun ownership by anyone with a misdemeanor conviction stemming from domestic violence. But there has been a gap in reporting the crime from New York.

Cuomo says the law will help keep firearms from those with violent records.

1. Great idea theoretically.
In real terms, a perpetrator of DV can procure a weapon on the street, at gun shows, by theft or may already possess such a weapon. The law merely frustrates and slows down a perp from getting a tool.

Similar to adding more punishment to anyone committing a crime with an illegal weapon. They're already going to be punished for the primary crime and the extra penalty for an illegal gun won't necessarily prevent the use of such a weapon.

2. Cool a redundant law because NY cannot keep up with their records.
How the hell will this make an improvement? If NY has a gap in reporting these crimes, how will having another law help? Why not fix the reporting issue instead?

Defies logic. Let's make something that is already illegal... well... illegal.

3. This is already illegal at the Federal Level.
Do try and keep up.

5. What's in the water in up there?
"Federal law prohibits gun ownership by anyone with a misdemeanor conviction stemming from domestic violence."

You would think that addresses the problem.

"But there has been a gap in reporting the crime from New York."

That sounds more like New York has been remiss in reporting the information on domestic violence convictions to Federal authorities. So in a fit of brilliance they pass another law, creating a essentially a duplicate list of the same people they are already not reporting to the NICS database?

"Cuomo says the law will help keep firearms from those with violent records."

What might have worked is if GOVERNOR Cuomo had issued an order to the cabinet level department head whose agency is supposed to report convictions to the the Feds, "Get off your ass and get your bureaucratic drones these reports filed with the FBI or YOU ARE FIRED!"

7. Oh, but here's the irony.
For the last four years, the cabinet level department head in charge of New York's legal system, and those reports, was... Andrew Cuomo.

9. Oh that's delicious..
"I need a redundant law! Why? Because I haven't been doing my job, that's why!"
