Amazon sales of baseball bats up 1000% in the UK
Via reddit:

It wouldn't be my first choice for self-defense, but I guess if you have no other choice but engaging in a physical contest of strength with your attackers, you do what you gotta do.

2. A cricket bat doesn't work as well when you're trying to hit someone in the head.
Too much wind resistance.

7. Turn it sideways
Seriously, a cricket bat is the most terrifying war club I have ever seen.

9. +1 ... turned sideways the sectional density is much greater than a round bat.

12. Absolutely correct-- but that requires a bit of steely eyed resolve.
For the panicked, "OMG there's some asshole on the porch coming through the door," type-situation, Ye Olde Baseball Bat can be used by anyone with enough fear-strength to land a blow!

Perhaps the baseball bats were a bit cheaper than the cricket ones?

13. If I recall correctly, a cricket bat was very effective in Shaun of the Dead
Hard to argue with a well-researched documentary like that...

22. And don't forget This Is Spinal Tap
As the band's manager, Ian Faith, puts it:
Certainly, in the topsy-turvy world of heavy rock, having a good solid piece of wood in your hand is often useful.

21. Yep, and its twice as heavy as a baseball bat, with a nice no-slip grip
Edited on Wed Aug-10-11 11:26 PM by Vehl
Blows from a sideways turned cricket bat are fatal if hit on the head, maybe even on the chest area. It's an edged weapon.

10. It absolutely does.
has nothing to do with guns.

Subjects in the UK are resorting to buying baseball bats for self defense because they don't have access to firearms.

They have to resort to a physical contest of strength against their assailants if they wish to defend themselves or their property.

This is the consequence of gun control. Victims of violent crime who wish to try and resist their assailants have to engage in a physical contest of strength with their attackers.

6. Not surprising
For all intents and purposes the UK has banned guns. Wants to ban knives. So what's left? The baseball bat.

Well, I guess there's always the Safe Bedside Table. http://www.likecool.com/Safe_Bedside_Table--Design--Home.html

Not as effective as an IKEA nightstand with a .45 in the drawer... but still pretty cool.

Always been afraid of holes in the wall much prefer my Mickey Mantle Little League bat more than 50 years old. I like the idea of a bat as it resonates. Just keep it in the house avoid taking it outside unless you are wanting to play ball.

15. I just looked and now the aluminum bat is at number two and a folding shovel
is number one, my guess is because one could carry it in your bag when going outside, instead of walking around with a baseball bat.

But hey, at least you can't shoot people with them, amirite?

Killing or maiming is ok, but one must be civilized in these matters. Shooting a gentleman assailant is just so... uncouth.
