Some unlikely candidates are ready to carry firearms
http://www.ohio.com/mld/beaconjournal/8133021.htm

"One is a fifth-grade teacher, another a stroke victim who walks with a cane.

Not exactly the folks you would expect to be packing heat.

But both recently took firearms training so they can become eligible to carry a concealed weapon come April."

``I've had three guys in wheelchairs,'' she said. ``I've had a multitude of guys with canes.''

Welcome to the modern world Ohio! And thank you for permitting the weak and disadvantaged the right to protect themselves.

1. then again that's a fairly typical
representation of the general public. just goes to show how mainstream gun ownership is and why we must not drive those people into the arms of the repugs with a hardline gun control platform.

"Not exactly the folks you would expect to be packing heat."

Seems pretty normal to me.

7. As long as they can hit what they're aiming at....
what's the problem? Hell, I know one guy who is legally blind, and still drives occasionally, even though he doesn't have a license.

11. If your unlicenced, legally blind friend drives on private property
I have no problem with it at all.

12. How about those taggants in European smokeless powder?
Found any evidence that they exist yet, or are you ready to concede you made a little boo-boo?

10. That is what I was referring to
There was never anyone advocating ARMING THE BLIND, which was a Straw Man presented by people who reacted emotionally to news that some people who are legally (not profoundly) blind are able to meet all of the qualifications to obtain a concealed-carry permit in some states.

I'm waiting for an "Arm all disabled people" Straw Man.

I am 100% in favor of blind people being able to purchase guns, who's agin me?

18. Purchase Is One Thing....
I'm totally opposed to people with severe vision impairments firing a gun anywhere but on a firing range. A loaded gun in the hands of someone who is not able to clearly see what the intended target truly is (a burglar, a dog, or a small child) is a tragedy waiting to happen, IMHO.

19. I'm not sure that I ever...
...disagreed with that. Blind people don't lose their judgement, just their sight. I'm sure they no more want to hurt a small child anymore than you or I do.

13. From The Article
Bob Campbell is one of the unlikely students.

The 64-year-old Mantua man suffered a stroke five years ago. As a result, he walks with a cane and has weaker vision in his left eye.

"I can't run and I can't fight anymore," he said. "If the state will let me carry a gun, it makes it a whole lot better."

Campbell said his physical condition has not affected his ability to shoot a gun.

Does the CCW process in Ohio include any physical or vision exams?? I hope it does, because I would hate to think that someone who was unable to accurately discern their target would be allowed to carry a concealed weapon....

14. No exams of that sort.
There is a shooting portion of the exam, in which one has to be able to discern the target to actually hit it.

...You have to be able to read and understand the state's pamphlet on deadly force. It's not clear whether there is a Braille edition or you can have someone read it to you or whether there is a way for a non-sighted person to complete the required training.

You may apply for a license, after the law goes into effect in April 2004, at your county Sheriff's office or the Sheriff of any county adjacent to yours. You will need to apply in person, submit an application provided by the Sheriff free of charge, provide a photo taken within the past 30 days, an original or photocopy of a certificate of completion of a firearm safety class indicate that you did read and review the state's pamphlet on deadly force, and pay a fee. You will be required to provide your fingerprints through an electronic device, unless your Sheriff does not have an electronic fingerprinting device. (Then you'll be printed by card). The Sheriff has 45 days to issue or deny your license, by law.

See http://www.packing.org/state/index.jsp/ohio

packing.org maintains information about all state concealed weapons laws at http://www.packing.org/states.jsp

A little more detail about the training courtesy of Ohioans for Concealed Carry:

· What are the training requirements?

updated: Each course, class, or program must provide to each person who takes the course, class, or program a copy of the pamphlet prepared by the Ohio peace officer training commission that reviews firearms, dispute resolution, and use of deadly force matters. Each class must include at least 12 hours of training in the safe handling and use of a firearm that shall include all of the following:

At least 10 hours of training in the following matters: Safe handling and proper storage, the ability to demonstrate and handle ammunition safely, the ability to demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to shoot a handgun in a safe manner, gun handling training, and:

At least two hours of training that consists of range time and live-fire training. To complete the course the applicant shall pass a competency examination given by the instructor of the class.
