Charges filed in racially tinged Federal Way shotgun attack

A Federal Way man accused of shouting a racist slur before firing a shotgun at a black man has been charged with assault.

King County prosecutors claim Jeremy S. Markham shouted curses and a racist slur at another Federal Way man before firing a shotgun at the man’s car. Arrested after a standoff with police, Markham, 38, is also alleged to have made derogatory comments to several women.

Charged with second-degree assault, Markham has not been accused of committing a hate crime. Nonetheless, prosecutors contend he made racist comments before the unprovoked attack.

“The defendant is alleged in this case to have confronted the victims without provocation, made racist remarks to the victims, and then later shooting at the victim's vehicle with a shotgun and causing damage to the victims' vehicle and injury to one of the victims as a result,” Deputy Proscutor Trinh Norsen told the court.

... Speaking with police, 37-year-old alleged victim said he was in front of his home with his brother and two women when Markham drove past on an ATV. According to charging documents, Markham knocked on the door of a neighboring home and then approached the 37-year-old’s home.

Markham asked if the women were prostitutes and was told they were not, and that he was being disrespectful, according to charging documents. A brief argument ensued before Markham returned to the ATV and rode away.

Just before speeding away, though, he shouted a racist slur at the man and his friends, according to charging documents.

The 37-year-old and his brother got in a car and attempted to follow Markham as he rode the ATV from the area. They stopped in front of a house where the ATV was parked and, according to charging documents, watched as Markham – now armed with a shotgun – climbed out of a nearby bush.

Okay, maybe the fool would have been fool enough to behave like that without a gun back home (and a getaway vehicle to get to it). He does seem maybe that stupid. But one does have to wonder.
