Gun in book bag falls, Albany, Ga. (5 Y.O.) child shot
http://www.walb.com/story/15289408/gun-in-book-bag-falls-albany-ga-child-shot

ALBANY, Ga. (AP) - Police in Albany say a 5-year-old girl was shot in the foot when a book bag she was trying to pick up at her home fell to the floor and a gun that was in it went off.

The Albany Herald reports (http://bit.ly/nzJG24) that Albany Police Department spokeswoman Phyllis Banks says the girl was going to do her homework Wednesday afternoon when she picked up the bag.

The girl's uncle, Charles Hayes, says she was taken to Phoebe Putney Hospital. No condition was available.

Banks says officers who arrived at the home did not find the gun. No details such as who owned the book bag or the gun were available.

1. Since when do 5-year-olds have homework assignments?
Gee, I'm trying to remember back to when I was in First Grade, I can't remember EVER having to take anything home, we did it all in class.

Guess schools are getting serious about that "Race To The Top" business...

2. Luckily it was just her foot...
...gawd forbid, the bullet hit her in the head. Her foot injury is unforgiveable ~~ but at least she is not dead.

Geeeeeeeeeeeez...someone put a gun in her book bag???

3. Remember, no gun zones just leave schoolchildren defenseless!

8. Yes, gun zones do indeed leave schoolchildren defenseless ..
That's why we need to have armed security, such as school resource officers, at schools.

While I am not opposed to allowing teachers and principals with concealed carry permits to carry at school, I also would not be opposed to requirements for such individuals to have a much higher level of training than the average person with a carry permit. This training could be designed around how to deal with violent situations or attacks that might be carried out in a school.

Schools are often targeted because they contain a lot of unarmed people and therefore are shooting galleries. Allowing qualified people to carry in schools or on college campuses could discourage such attacks or provide a much faster response than waiting for off campus police to arrive.

6. Being loose in the bag,
something in the bag could have pressed the trigger.

Then the gun magically disappears...

9. I would hate to have my guns decide to run away ...
that's why I take good care of them and make sure that they have a nice safe place to stay.
