The link in Google's news section reads "Mentally handicapped gun collector arrested in Mora shooting". Would anyone care to explain how a mantally handicapped person get to be a gun collector? - Waynr

Mora man charged with shooting family

A man who lives near Mora, Minn., was charged Thursday with intentional second-degree murder in his mother's death and attempted first-degree murder in the shooting of his father and stepmother.

At his attorney's request, Ryan Miller, 26, will undergo testing at the Minnesota State Security Hospital in St. Peter for mental illness and competency.

In a court paper three years ago, his mother described him as disabled and "emotionally, mentally, physically and socially delayed" from seizures, surgery and medications he had experienced after a vaccination at age 2 1/2.

8. Was the man barred
from gun ownership by Felony conviction, by being ruled a mental defective, by being committed to an institution, by drug use, by domestic violence?

10. If he was mentally handicapped...
and that's an IF, he probably got it illegally (stole it, bought a stolen gun, etc.).

12. Notice the standard evasion:
he probably got it illegally (stole it, bought a stolen gun, etc.).

...and that "etc." just happens to cover the most likely possibility: that he simply bought it from a "law abiding gun owner" who wasn't legally obligated to give a damn about whether the buyer is eligible or not.

5. Was he ever adjudicated
as 'mentally incompetent' and/or committed to an institution ?

The only thing in the article that mentions anything about says that his mother testified that he was, but it doesnt mention the decision.

7. My Mom called me crazy
on many occasions. Personally, I think she's the one off the deep end, but we both could be right!

And I've got a lot of guns, which reminds me, I need to clean my shotguns. Went through 2 cases of 12 and 20 gauge yesterday on the skeet range.

11. Check this out...
"Police have arrested a mentally handicapped gun collector in a triple shooting here that killed his mother and wounded his father and stepmother.
In a court statement three years ago, his mother, Deborah Miller, said he was disabled and "emotionally, mentally, physically and socially delayed from the seizures, surgery and medications" he had experienced.
Her son began to have seizures at age 2 1/2 after a vaccination, and they were so severe that they could not be controlled by medication alone, his mother said. In 1988, at age 10, he had a temporal lobectomy, surgery to remove part of the brain where seizures seemed to originate. She said in 2000 that he had then been seizure-free for more than two years.
Various neighbors described the man as "slow," someone who made them nervous, but a man who loved his parents and gave tips on gardening."
