Anybody around here lose a bullet casing?
Edited on Thu Aug-25-11 07:48 PM by rocktivity
I've lived in this apartment since 2003. Today, in a deep dark corner of a closet, I find what I thought was a metal button from my jean jacket. I pick it up and realize it's cylindrical, about 3/4-inch long and 1/4-inch wide. The top is open and hollow, the bottom says "Speer" on top and "40 S&W" beneath. The center has a small indentation.

I made up a scenario about it being a bullet casing for a Smith and Wesson, and the indentation being the result of a trigger hitting it. Then I do a web search for "Speer 40 S&W" -- and I land on an ammo site!

1. Sounds like some cowboy toter infested your apartment a decade ago
You should move - once a gun has polluted a place, no decent liberal could possibly sleep in the festering evil miasma... :scared:

2. Definitely a HazMat situation.
Depending on how long the OP was exposed to it, it could cause irreparable brain damage, hallucinations, paranoia, dementia, shortness of breath, profuse sweating and diarrhea of the mouth.

Symptoms of the final stages frequently are joining/contributing to the Brady Campaign/VPC, embracing anti-gun politicians and agendas, and/or relocating to Kanada (or some other "gun free" Pepperland).

I'd be concerned... VERY concerned!

7. Ah, but now we know it wasn't DU after all - it was the nasty psychic emanations from that
bit of metal, left behind by some depraved sub-human. Now that your space is purged of dark forces, and with extensive therapy and the support of your loved ones, you may be able to return from the shadows. Sadly, it's too late for the rest of us (but please! remember our poor tormented souls when you return to civilized society... ;) )

12. You're not far from the truth
Didn't they do a hazmat circus for a .22 bullet found in England once?

4. It's mine.....
Back in 2002, I went to a local range here in Texas, and rented a .40 Glock. Bought a box of ammo and fired all 50 rounds. I picked up all my brass but one, and never could find that last empty.

Glocks sure throw the empties a loooooong way. :hi:

8. This reminded me of a story from the UK earlier this year
http://www.yorkpress.co.uk/news/8805022.Fossgate_bullet_find_mystery/

A STARTLED man has told how he found a bullet lying in a York city-centre street.

Tim Stark said he was unloading items into the MOR Music store where he works in Fossgate yesterday morning when he spotted what he believed to be a live .22 bullet gleaming in a puddle.

He said he immediately called police, who came and took it away.

“I have no idea what it was doing there,” he said.

A North Yorkshire Police spokesman said the bullet had been put into safe storage, and CID had confirmed it was not thought to be connected with any incident currently under investigation.

He asked anyone with any information about the bullet and how it came to be in Fossgate to phone the force on 0845 60 60 47.

Well thank God. Who knows what terror could have resulted had the police not been called. I can sleep better knowing that the bullet cartridge has been put into "safe storage". Of course, Mr. Stark could have simply thrown the bullet cartridge into the nearest dumpster and saved the police the trouble...but that wouldn't have been much of a story, would it?

Me, I try to store my bullets cartridges (well, some of them, at least) where they should be...in clips magazines!

9. What's the big deal?
I have a shell casing for a 6.5x55mm Swedish Mauser sitting on my computer table beside me as I type.

10. Thank goodness it is a caliber that starts with a four
You wouldn't want any sissy casings laying around for other people to find.

11. It *could* be one of mine...
...except I've never lived in an apartment in the U.S.

Your surmise wasn't far off: the indentation is the imprint left by the pistol's firing pin on the primer. It's not a round for a Smith & Wesson per se, but rather, the round was developed by Smith & Wesson, hence the designation ".40 S&W".

Depending on the color, it's either a casing for a Gold Dot hollow-point or a Lawman full metal jacket; the former is white (nickel-coated brass) while the latter is yellow. It's the brand I use for my defensive pistols (which do happen to be Smith & Wessons), not least because Speer makes their Lawman target rounds to match their Gold Dot counterparts in ballistic performance.

14. When searching through a 80-yr-old day pack, my brothers came
across a round none of us used: A .308 completely chromed over; it had a "69" stamped on the rim, and a hole drilled through the bottom of the shell casing (indicating a dummy). They showed no interest in it, but I thought it would make a necklace adornment. Imagine, though when I pulled the bullet out and turned it over and found a tweezers-like arrangement with a slide-up bead on it.

I wonder what it was meant for?

Anyway I found a lot of use for it. :smoke:
