Officials investigate missing ammo at Fort Bragg
from Associated Press

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Officials at Fort Bragg say an investigation is under way into the disappearance of nearly 14,000 rounds of ammunition at the Army base.

Staff Sgt. Joshua Ford, a spokesman for the 82nd Airborne Division, says the ammunition went missing from the 1st Brigade Combat Team at Fort Bragg.

The Fayetteville Observer reports (http://bit.ly/rcSmoA ) that Ford believed the ammunition was taken overnight on Tuesday. The 1st Brigade team was placed on lockdown for a few hours Wednesday night while officials conducted a search.

2. What type of ammunition was taken?
Edited on Sat Sep-10-11 08:56 AM by RSillsbee
depending on the type that's 20 something cases

ETA According to the article it was 5.56 ball 14 cases . I bet it's sitting in a bunker somewhere just miscounted.

3. Probably. The military has extremely tight accountability for arms and
ammunition. I think it's either a miscount, or some other logistical error.

4. From past experience on Army ranges
The ammunition handlers do not like to turn in unexpended rounds. I've seen them load up every magazine and just tell the troops to have a down range ammo dump.

It's also been my experience that live ammunition is kept in bunkers at the post ASP stealing ammunition from there would be like taking gold from Fort Knox

6. Agreed
Retail, 14 cases of 5.56 is only worth about $5500, stealing it and selling it won't even get a thief that much. Somebody made a mistake and did the paperwork wrong or put it in the wrong truck or some other mistake.

5. Basic gun safety should be taught in public schools
Theft of military ammunition is a federal crime. A person who is willing to steal ammunition they might also be willing to write bad checks, hit the alarm button in an elevator when there is no emergency, or shirk paying their taxes.

9. I havent seen any green tip at the local Wally World
But they did get rid of the 250 round boxes of 9mm. It made good practice ammo. Made me mad enough to buy a reloading press.

10. They were probably grabbing it for personal use.
Figured no one would notice if they took it one case at a time.

11. but instead
they now know what article 31 of the UCMJ is, and where to find the post's defense JAG's office. (in the Air Force, it is called the area defense council, not sure what the army calls it)
