It's Politics: Big week for gun control
http://www.pasadenastarnews.com/ci_18867541

Two bills that would tighten regulation of firearms in the Golden State made it out of the Legislature this week.
Assembly Bill 144, authored by Assemblyman Anthony Portantino, D-Pasadena, would ban the "open carry" of unloaded handguns in public.

And under Assembly Bill 809, by Assemblyman Mike Feuer, D-West Hollywood, the state would keep records of rifle sales, as it currently does for handguns.

In recent years, A.B. 144 proved controversial among Southland "open carry" enthusiasts who made it a point of gathering at public places to display unloaded guns strapped to their hips.

1. It would be very useful to have some info on how many and what sorts of crimes
our CA handgun registry has helped solve. We've had that registry (of imports and sales) for years now - has it in fact been a useful tool for law enforcement? Anyone seen any data or anecdotes to suggest that? Without evidence that the handgun registry has helped, it's hard to argue that doing the same thing for long guns would be worth the hassle...

But Sen. Kevin De Leon, D-Los Angeles, called the measure "a very simple" tool for law enforcement officers to track the movement of long guns - which he added are increasingly used in violent crimes.

"You need data to help solve crimes," De Leon said, adding that the bill has "nothing to do with the Second Amendment" and doesn't prohibit anyone from lawfully purchasing or using long guns."

3. California is clearly out of step with the rest of the US
Some here think that must issue will be law here sometime soon. I seriously doubt it.

7. Will be interesting to see what the governor does with it.
Governor Brown isn't totally on board the gun control band-wagon, so he might veto it.
