Homeowner shoots through door to stop home invasion.

HAMMOND, La. -- A Hammond man shouted a warning before he shot a 12-gauge shotgun at his door as several people attempted to gain access to his home,

Makes me wonder about my choice of mostly glass doors.

2. Personally, I don't agree with shooting through a closed door.
Although the police are calling it jutified, as long as the door is still closed you are still safe - in general, although there are exceptions such as arson, or the other guy is shooting through the door already. Take up a position that is behind as much cover as possible while keeping the shotgun trained on the door. When they make it through the door, then shoot. Call 911 first. If the cops get there first then he is theirs. If he gets in first then you have the 911 call to back up your story.

8. I don't consider doors much of a safety factor, especially since...
I watched a patient take down a 5000 foot-pound rated security door on our locked psych unit. No drugs, just paranoid fear. He made it through on the third kick. Less than 5 seconds total. 3-point mag locks and he managed to pop it.

10. After the door comes down, then you use the shotgun.
Of course not in a psych unit, but in home defense. While the door is still there you can wait, shotgun ready. Granted, the wait may be only a second or two. A busted in door is strong evidence for the cops that you had to shoot.

13. It's a better choke point before they take the door off it's hinges.
Once they are through the door, all bets are off.

18. Might not be that easy

The doorway is wider than the people, generally speaking, and if they're twisting and sliding through, that complicates things.

People can also come through the doorway faster than you can recover and re-acquire, especially if they are moving towards different points of the house as they come through.

Probably the best thing to do is as soon as that door flies open is to open fire. If there's a bad guy there, he's killed, injured, or scared shitless. And the shot will make everybody else behind him rapidly reconsider their choice of targets.

19. Right. As soon as the door flies open.
Of course you could have a Siaga 12 gauge with a 20 round magazine and rapid sweep-fire the area. Get the bad guy and the door frames and walls on each side.

3. There Was Another Incident in Atlanta a Few Years Back
Unfortunately in that case, the persons trying to gain access to her home were the police.
She got something like 72 bullets in her before they stopped shooting.
The cops were looking for drugs. There weren't any.

Maybe it's good to be able to see whom you are shooting at.

5. Now there's a crazy idea!
They should at least invest in a GPS or something to make sure they're kicking down the right door!

7. Learn how to match numbers on a piece of paper to the numbers on the front of the residence would
even help. Maybe check the corner street signs to see what street they are on?

9. I'll bet that guy refrains from trying to break into any more houses.
At least until he gets out of jail for this one. To criminals just not have access to the news or something? One would think that constant news stories about others in your trade of taking shit that's not theirs getting capped, they'd consider, oh, I dunno, looking for honest work. You know, like everybody else is doing-withouth turning into criminals.

11. I have to wonder about the intelligence of some of them.
Recently here in Dallas copper thieves tried to pull an electrical cable from an underground conduit. 13,000+ volts. They were cooked on the spot.

Another on in San Antonio climbed the fence, cut the barbed wire, and climbed on top of a transformer at a sub-station. Then he tried to cut the copper cable. 70,000 volts.

Another one in Akron, OH was on fire when the fire department arrived. Not his clothes on fire, HE was on fire. The body was so badly burned that it will take dental records to ID him.

Two more died stealing copper in SoCal.

Another climbed a power pole and cut the line with a hacksaw.

And so on. Googling turns up dozens of different deaths.

You would think the word would get out in the criminal community that electricity is dangerous stuff. Even 110 can kill.

17. Solid defense.
The door really helps to keep them from killing you before you can stop them. Excellent tactics.
