More firearms does not increase crime as proven by the dropping violent crime rate despite the skyrocketing sale of firearms throughout the nation. Also if "shall issue" concealed carry increased violent crime rate, surely by now there would be undeniable evidence.
Downward trend in violent crime continues in US, report showsSep 18, 2011Washington - Violent crime in the US experienced a double-digit drop in 2010, far greater than the nation’s average during the last decade, with violent and property victimization rates falling to their lowest levels since the early 1990s, a new report shows.
The Bureau of Justice Statistics’ National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS), Criminal Victimization, 2010 (pdf), obtains information on nonfatal crimes against residents age 12 or older and reveals they experienced a 13 percent decline last year, around three times the average annual decrease seen from 2001 through 2009 (4%). However, the percentage of victims suffering an injury as the result of a violent crime increased from 24 percent in 2008 to 29 percent in 2010.
Property victimization fell by 6 percent in 2010, compared to the 3 percent average annual decrease from 2001 through 2009.
Experts are unable to pinpoint the reason, as high unemployment and a weak economy tend to see an increase in criminal activity. “We’re surprised to find how much it declines,” said Professor Alfred Blumstein of Carnegie Mellon University’s Heinz School, Time reports.

So far that is roughly 14,000,000+ guns bought last year!
The total is probably more as many NICS background checks cover the purchase of more than one gun at a time by individuals.
To put it in perspective that is more guns than the combined active armies of the top 21 countries in the world.
http://www.ammoland.com/2010/01/13/gun-owners-buy-14-million-plus-guns-in-2009/ If I am right and better policing does reduce violent crime, we will probably start to see a significant increase in the next few years as budget restraints caused police departments and prisons to cut back.
September 19, 2011Crime spikes almost 50 percent in city
Chief: Downsizing of Lawrence Police Department has taken its tollLAWRENCE — Major crime in the city has been creeping up to dangerous levels since the Lawrence Police Department lost more than a quarter of its force to budget cuts in July of last year.
Auto theft has nearly doubled. Aggravated assaults have increased by more than half.
There have been 100 more burglaries of homes and businesses. Murders and robberies are both on the rise by more than 27 percent.
Overall, there has been a 44 percent jump in so-called Part One Felony Crimes that are reported annually to the FBI in the 13 months since the Police Department lost 41 positions, compared to a similar period before the layoffs.

Bloomberg, who has ordered 10 rounds of budget cuts since 2007, pins the city's fiscal health and its future on ensuring its residents' safety and improving public school education.
Budget cuts risk imperiling these priorities, reducing the number of firefighting staff to 10,282, and the number of uniformed police officers to 34,413. Bloomberg's $65 billion budget plan also includes just under 5,000 teacher layoffs.
"The city's ability to deliver needed and expected services while maintaining budget balance may be severely tested if state and federal cutbacks continue to mount," the Independent Budget Office's report said.

Andrew Cuomo calls for shutting state prisons, investing in community in light of gun violenceSunday, September 18th 2011, 4:41 PMGov. Cuomo bemoaned the city's recent spate of gun violence Sunday and made a pitch for his plan to shutter state prisons.
"This recent rash of gun violence should concern us all, because it's frightening and it's only getting worse," Cuomo said at a Harlem breakfast to kick off the African-American Day Parade.
He said closing some prisons would allow more funding for local programs.

Cuomo also pushed for stricter gun control laws from the federal government.

It's a proven tactic and often the voters buy it.
