Man pulls gun to stop attack on woman
http://host.madison.com/ct/news/local/crime_and_courts/article_64d2253a-dd45-11e0-b4e8-001cc4c002e0.html

"He saw the suspect standing over the woman, stomping on her head," DeSpain said. "He yelled for the man to stop but his pleas fell on deaf ears."

The man went back to his apartment to get his cell phone so he could call 911, but he couldn't find the phone and grabbed the handgun instead.

"He went back into the hallway and pointed the gun at the suspect, once again ordering him to stop," DeSpain said. "This time, the suspect paid heed."

Better living through superior firepower. I wonder if the stomper would have "paid heed" if the neighbor had not been armed?

All in all, a successful outcome--woman was not raped or seriously injured, the stomper went to jail, no one was shot, and a gun served as a useful tool to change the dynamics of what could have been a tragic situation.

1. I've got a shotgun with a 2-cartridge clip - pop it in and throw the bolt and I'm ready.

2. I am a from Madison and don't like seeing civilians armed
but I must say that this story made me happy. The person with the gun acted sensibly and cooperated with police, calling 911 before getting involved... If "concealed carry" leads to more criminal incidents being prevented, it will be a good thing.

10. "getting involved"???
Taking action to rescue someone from a potentially fatal beating is GETTING INVOLVED??

What is this, NYC in 1964??

29. Good thing there was a gun owner that happened by.
Instead of just feebly shouting from the sidelines while waiting for the police to show up, the gun owner DEFENDED another innocent person from a piece of shit criminal asshole. I would say that "getting involved" is pretty accurate, iverglas. (see, referring directly to you) Pity none of the other neighbors bothered to lift a fucking finger to help someone having their head stomped in the hall.

Must say I'm rather amazed at the lack of denigration toward the "rude toter" for standing up to the violent piece of shit. Guess I'll have to wait for the next DGU thread..

4. Question: Was this neighbor a "rude toter"? Was he "brandishing"?
Was he compensating for small genitalia?

How will the gun-haters spin this?

7. Anyone who can locate a gun faster than they can find a phone clearly has
an unhealthy fascination with firearms, and is thus unfit to own one.

bolted down, in the same location.

12. I seems reasonable to me that any gun owner
would know the EXACT location of their firearms. As a matter of fact, isn't it a popular idea among many proponents of stricter firearms law, that owners should be held responsible for safe storage and even misuse of said firearms, if they are accessed by someone else (including if it is stolen)?

While I have misplaced my cell phone on more than one occasion, I have never misplaced a firearm.

17. I "lost" a glock once only to discover it had fallen out of a shoulder hoster while shovelling snow.
I have a wide driveway that wraps around my house so shovelling takes awhile. At some point the gun had fallen out of my pocket into a snow pile. I have a jacket with a nice holster sewn into it. Later that evening I went to put the gun in my nightstand only to find it wasn't in my coat (on the coatrack) or nightstand or car. I freaked for like 20 minutes until I rembered that I was shovelling snow and eventually found it in a pile of snow. Damn thing was like an ice cube and I thaw it before stripping it for cleaning. lol

Lesson learned - don't do physical activities without a retention holster.

25. Well...I know that they're all in safes
With the exception of the Mossberg 590 that's currently doing home-defense duty.

As for which gun is in which safe, I do admit to occasionally have to think, "Ok, did I put the Mauser 1934 in safe #2 or safe #5...?"

13. I cannot tell you how much time I waste in a day looking for my phone. I know EXACTLY where
my self defense handgun is ALL the time. I consider it rather important to know where it is all the time. I think you will find the same of any responsible gun owner.

"He was afraid if he didn't do something the woman might end up dead," DeSpain said.

27. Wait, aren't we supposed to just give the criminal what he wants?
I thought from reading from the hop lops around here that when confronted with a violent criminal we were supposed to just give them what they wanted? Obviously all this guy wanted was to do a little head stomping - why didn't the guy just let him have what he wanted?

Fact is, if the guy didn't have a firearm he would have had no choice but to intervene by means of a physical contest of strength with his attacker. The gun was an equalizer that allowed him to force the attacker to stop his assault without resorting to a physical contest of strength.
