A few days ago I posted
about the arrest of Jesus Paredes Rodriguez. After San Francisco police officers noticed him dealing drugs, he allegedly pulled out a gun and incited the police to fire at him unsuccessfully in self-defense. Well...it turns out that the San Francisco police mistook Rodriguez for another suspected criminal ("
Cops' mistaken ID led to North Beach woundings"). Also, according to SFPD Lt. Troy Dangerfield, "all three of the officers involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation." The police officers shot Rodriguez because they saw him pull out a gun but missed and hit two bystanders instead. So what should the police department do to avoid risk of innocent bystanders being hit by officer fire? Either scale back firing of service weapons or hold criminal suspects accountable for causing injury to others in police procedure?
