SNIP
The property owner shot the alleged burglar to death just before 1 a.m. today at a home in the 5600 block of Maple Avenue.

SNIP

The property owner, who is 66, apparently was not living at the home. He told police that he had been burglarized over the weekend and returned to the home after midnight Sunday to check on the residence.

SNIP

The property owner told police that he ordered the intruder to not move, but the intruder started coming toward him. "In fear for his safety, the victim fired a shot at the suspect, striking him in the shoulder," according to a St. Louis Police Department summary of the shooting.

SNIP

Police have not arrested the property owner. Katie O'Sullivan, a police department spokeswoman, said Monday morning that police think the shooting appears justified.

Burglary remains a high risk occupation.

Although not stated it appears that the homeowner was carrying a gun on him when he returned home.

Death from a hit in the shoulder. But,...but..in the movies the hero shrugs off such hits and is back in action in minutes. In real life the shoulder has the subclavian artery in it and a person can bleed out if that artery is cut, or if a vein is hit then air can enter the vein and go to the heart. There really isn't a "safe" place to shoot a person, contrary to some antis who say we should shoot for an arm or a leg.

2. Don't break into other people's property if you don't want ambushed.
It's a very easy thing to avoid if you really want to.

His baser instincts emboldened him to strap on 2 or 3 pistols and go shoot some special loads.

4. Wow - elderly people ARE dangerous gun owners.
Of course DGUs are a John Lott fantasy anyway...I think the elder chap actually had his gun taken from him (or he dropped it) and it went off accidentally and hit the perp, showing how needless guns are for all mankind.
