Jerry Brown signs ban on Open Carry of fire arms
Edited on Mon Oct-10-11 03:08 PM by demosincebirth
Gov. Jerry Brown has outlawed the open carrying of unloaded handguns in California, signing a bill late Sunday night that makes the practice that had been popular with some gun rights advocates a misdemeanor in the state.

The bill, AB144 by Assemblyman Anthony Portantino, D-La Cañada Flintridge (Los Angeles County), will take effect Jan. 1 and was backed by law enforcement officials throughout the state who said the practice created a public safety issue.

"We view the open carrying of unloaded handguns as a threat to the safety of the communities we police and the safety of our officers," said David L. Maggard, Jr., president of the California Police Chiefs Association.

The ban does not apply to law enforcement, people authorized to carry loaded weapons in public or to people selling unloaded weapons at gun shows, among other exemptions.

Violations of the law will carry a fine of up to $1,000 and up to six months in county jail.

2. Now if only he hadn't
Vetoed a bill that would have allowed child care workers to unionize and vetoed a bill that would prevent police from searching your mobile phone without a warrant.

One step forward -- two steps back.

Brown is a big disappointment.

25. Urban environmentalism, a la Bambi...
Thanks for the info on Whitman. Hunting is an integral part of a healthy ecology. But if you lived in the city, and followed the dictates of city sentimentalists, you'd never know it.

24. His two vetoes affect people substantially; his signing is prohi- huff-puff
signifying nothing, except protracted suits (at taxpayer expense), and a push to legalize concealed-carry.

Please explain how his signing a huff-puff bill helps the public good? Is this signing the equivalent of the 2 measures he vetoed?

4. Disappointing. Brown usually has a good record on such things.
Of course this will probably result in a bigger win for concealed carry later on--the last court case was tossed out on the grounds that since anyone could openly carry, the grossly unequal standards for concealed carry weren't really an undue burden.

6. exactly
and even if it were just a matter of which is better someone concealing a firearm legally or illlegally vs. someone openly carrying I would think there would be less objection to open carry.

13. I didn't know the Koch Bros. were that into gun rights.
Seems like they might be a little worried about an armed populace rising up or something, considering the protests at their door-steps now:

15. Interesting world you live in. Pity it doesn't match up to reality.
Because in reality, these suits are taken on by lawyers who believe that average people, and not just the ultra wealthy who can afford private security, deserve the right to protect themselves. And they're funded by the cities and states like Chicago that continually try to deny their people that right, when the courts smack them down and make them pay for their lawbreaking.

"prancing" around with guns anymore than Mayor Mikey does. You realize it was the Kochs of their time who wrote many of the laws you so love.

28. To hear these Democrats complain about how bad the GOP is,
their bent to authoritarianism, restricting voter rights, stomping the Bill of Rights, pro-corporate doctrines, etc., I find it hard to believe that when the GOP is in power that it's okay "...if only the govt were allowed to possess firearms."

Makes you wonder how seriously they take some of the critiques liberals make about the GOP.

AB144 exempted long guns. Thank you,Assemblyman Portantino and Governor Brown!

You will also note that they tend to be heavily lawyered up, so any arrests for not breaking the law will cost California taxpayers
a nice chunk of change.

"California Gov. Jerry Brown is vetoing legislation requiring police to obtain a court warrant to search the mobile phones of suspects at the time of any arrest."

Ignore elected representatives...just just let the courts decide.
