Home-invasion suspect stabbed, struck in head with own gun
At one point, the man with the gun was standing on a stool and searching through a closet when the weapon reportedly slipped and fired, striking a wall, Bertagna said.

The robbers reportedly asked the victims to help them collect property from the home.

While they collected the items, one of the victims picked up a knife, Bertagna said.

{snip}

When the robber with the gun turned his back to the victims, the man who had picked up the knife stabbed him in the back and knocked away the gun, Bertagna said. He was apparently able to grab the gun and strike the robber several times in the head.

Yes, they sound like bumbling idiots, but those could be the most dangerous kind of home invaders. I wouldn't want to depend upon their incompetence for my safety and my family's well being.

1. Yeah, this certainly demonstrates that one should own a knife, and also a club.
Much safer to use a club to hit an invader over the head than to use a gun, because the latter might go off.

2. Yeah, and just hope & pray you can get within striking range.
Good plan.

4. Much safer to muffle your shot with the invader's chin. It will protect your hearing.
Gotta watch for shrapnel though.

17. I prefer not to muss the finish on my revolver, and fire it instead.
Incidentally, modern revolvers all have some sort of "hammer bar" which must be in place if the gun is to fire. To put it into place, you need to pull the trigger or cock the hammer back; otherwise, the bar falls clear of the hammer and it will not fire, even if you threw it out into the street. Which is why I use a revolver.

5. Yeah but, but, but...
He was able to stop the crime without a gun of his own, see. So you really don't NEED a gun to defend yourself.

:sarcasm: thingy just in case it was needed.

6. Bravo to the homeowner
File it under the heading: Guns do not make you safe; Guns are only a tool.

The human brain is the best weapon we have. Cool thinking under pressure can turn a potentially life threating situation into jail time for the perpetrators.

A person may not always be able to bring a gun to bear, which may entail using whatever is at hand for self defense. Even a smack across the face may be just enough to get to your gun or to make a hasty retreat from danger.

21. Romancing the thug thing? Nice one.
You're funny. Not as funny as me, but still funny. Maybe we could team up and write musicals
Roy Rogers and Trigger Stein

Romance da thug now
Hit'im on da head
Romance da thug now
Club'im till he's dead
Take away his gun now

22. Not bad, but a little over the top -- taking stuff too seriously does not
become you. The best comics were in fact politically "correct" (re, they had a believable point of view), and dealt with serious stuff all the time, not as a T.V. bull-in-the-ring challenge to all comers. And they went to jail for it, like Bruce and Gregory.

One of my heroes as a kid was Wyatt Earp. Loved the way he would use his Buntline Special as a club.

18. The old custom in the South:
If you threaten someone with a gun, and that someone gets a hold of your gun, you are liable to receive a pistol-whipping. Not a bad custom, esp. if you use a heavy-caliber revolver, and are able to clean all the hair, blood and teeth out of it.

23. Great custom. I always keep a tire iron around myself
Funny, when you think of it, a tire iron on a boat, but you'd be surprised how often it comes in handy. I thought of getting a gun, still am, but I don't have much hammering to do (and anyway, I have a hammer) and there aren't any people to shoot out here. Shooting fish is silly and the birds are all protected, not to mention the fact that I love them.
