Mother fires gun to protect 5 kids
KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) - "I keep a firearm in this house because it has happened in other houses in this neighborhood. I never knew if it could be me," said Janelle Johnson.

{snip}

Her deadbolt did not protect her when she heard the knocking, but her pistol did. "I was sitting in my room on the computer. I heard someone knocking on the door. Next thing you know, I heard a lot of force coming into the door. When I got up to see what was going on, the door was kicked open, so I just grabbed my gun and started firing," said Johnson.

{snip}

"All my kids were in the house sleeping, and I didn't want anything to happen to my children," said Johnson.

{snip}

"Probably a little safer. People will probably think twice before they kick in the door of this house again," said Johnson. "I did what I had to do to defend my family."

I'm glad she was prepared and aware enough to defend herself, her family and her home.

1. She should have waited for the police to protect her and her kids.
Yes boys and girls, that was sarcasm. Good instincts, mom.

3. "Hold on, Mr. violent Home Invader! I have to call 911, explain my
situation in detail to the not-too-helpful operator, wait for her to dispatch a squad car to my residence, and it may take about five to ten minutes for them to get here. Would you mind terribly waiting on the front porch until then? Thanks so much."

29. Why would you resort to sarcasm? Do you think this is funny?
Or do you not believe in protecting your family and yourself in your own home?

4. Tool? That's a dealer of DEATH she grabbed! The horrors!
She should never be allowed such a dangerous weapon in a civilized society! :sarcasm:

(Let's just ignore the fact that in a truly "civilized" society, thugs wouldn't be kicking down people's doors.)

17. According to the article...
...she had the deadbolt on and the intruder kicked through the door anyway. :scared:

I'd call that an emergent situation...

I don't own a gun, but if somebody kicked down my deadbolted door I'd probably grab for the nearest equalizer (anything that can be thrown, swung, used to strike with) as well...THEN call 911 while I was getting the hell outta there (no kids here) while intruder was distracted/disabled.

I hope.:shrug:

you can keep anyone from kicking in your door.

http://www.lionsgatesecurity.com/arch_angel/door_devil.html

Then if they do get past that, and you will hear it then you'll have time to get your gun, your gun can stop them.

Less blood to clean up and no nightmares.

24. That specific product? No.
It's not the only form of door reinforcement though. You can approach that level of reinforcement simply by using 3 inch steel screws at all connection points for the door. It also doesn't protect against spreading the jamb.

So no, I'm not going to bet you. Particularly not narrowed to a single obscure door product. (that costs probably 8x the actual material cost to make.)

28. That's what my post was about, but
I'll still be willing to bet a hundred bucks that they did not install 3 inch screws in the striker and hinges. That only cost about five bucks to do several doors.

42. Not any more than you wish to
make it easy for felons to have easy access to handguns. Perhaps you could point out my words where I blamed anyone personally for not securing their home. If they don't know about cheap easy ways to protect their home, I'd be glad to spread the word. Next someone will accuse anyone that gives out information about home security of being anti gun. If you look back, I also included using a gun as last resort to protect yourself. See this article that I posted
http://www.itstactical.com/intellicom/physical-security/protecting-against-home-invasions/
Does this article that gives information on home security blame victims too? Any time I can show how a crime can be prevented you seem to spin it as "blame the victim", much like Limbaugh is able to blame Democrats for any republican policy. You are getting good at it. The old, just keep repeating it until you think they think it is true.

27. A kick to the center of the door could cause enough flex
to disengage a 1" deadbolt and standard striker. Or maybe not...

What would be better is a door with multiple bolts working like a safe. 1 top 1 bottom 3 down the side would make a nice starter door.

40. That probably should be part of the building code, actually
I used to work in a place that made prison architectural hardware. The door frames were usually 12- or 14- gauge sheet steel welded into a single unit. Assuming the lock was decent, I don't see how anybody could rip out the door jamb.
