Texas Rep (R-moran) Wants to Allow Some People to Carry Concealed Guns in D.C. Just Some

Earlier this year, Republican (edit: moran) Texas Rep. Louie Gohmert drafted a bill that would exclude 535 people from D.C.’s bar on concealed guns. Why? So legislators can blast would be criminals and constituents, if need be. That idea didn’t go over to well, but it sure as hell didn’t deter Gohmert.

Today, the House Judiciary Committee will consider legislation that would permit residents of states with concealed carry laws to carry concealed guns in other states with similar laws. Furthermore, this would create an exception in D.C., as it would grant someone from another state permission to carry their weapon in the city, even though it’s against local gun regulations.

2. If they had their way
Only white male heterosexual Christian American citizens would be allowed to own guns.

3. That is how concealed carry worked for a long time, then the bans became equal opportunity.

6. Actually, "they" did: In the Jim Crow South. Those days are gone...
...except for the most part in D.C., NYC, Chicago and a few other spots.

One of the side-effects of the 1964 Public Accommodations Act: Other Jim Crow laws not dealing with public accommodations per se, bit the dust or became dead-letter laws. I wish folks North of the Mason Dixon Line (and in California) would kick that old bird out of their nest.

4. I just knew when I read that headline it had to be Louie
Remember, he's the one who apologized to BP for the rest of us getting all rude about inquiries and fines after their sloppiness poisoned much of the northern Gulf of Mexico.

7. Sounds like a good idea...our reps should be able to protect themselves.
The only bad part of this bill is it leaves out 300 million other Americans that shouldn't be defenseless.

10. What do you know, jpak and I agree on something.
Although I'm sure for entirely different reasons. This is just an extension of the principle of special rules for the well connected. It's not legal for a single mom in a shitty neighborhood in Chicago to carry a gun to protect herself, but it's legal for an Alderman, who probably lives in a nice neighborhood with special protection from the police, to have one. Elected officials shouldn't be entitled to an extra level of special favors that the people around them aren't. Gohmert's attitude is fundamentally the same as the Brady Campaign: guns for the government, the rich, the powerful, and fuck the regular people. And yet people still claim Republicans aren't in favor of gun control.
