Guess which state has the highest percentage of murders committed by Handguns??
Edited on Sat Oct-15-11 09:42 PM by Logical
ILLINOIS!! The ONLY state that does not allow citizens to carry concealed weapons! Wow, isn't that odd??

And IL is a really hard state to buy guns in. It requires a Firearm Owner's Identification (FOID) card, which is issued by the state police. And a 3 day waiting period for handguns.

Unless you are a criminal and steal one.

Somehow criminals must be murdering people with handguns that they obtain, maybe illegally and criminals must also be carrying guns concealed even though it is illegal. I am sure the criminals do not fear any armed citizens because there is no CC laws in IL. Hmmm....interesting.

This is from the 2010 FBI Crime report.

Top Three.....
Illinois - 453 Murders in 2010, 355 by Handgun, 78% by handgun!
Maryland - 424 Murders in 2010, 272 by Handgun, 64% by Handgun
Louisiana - 437 Murders in 2010, 263 by Handgun, 60% by Handgun

Do the math yourself. Download the Excel version of this FBI file and divide column D (Handgun Murders) by column B (Total Murders).

10. States that have a lower percentage of deaths caused by handguns?
And if my guess is right, perhaps allowing citizens in Illinois to carry handguns with a permit as is allowed in most states would reduce the percentage of people who die from handguns.

We may find out in the near future when Illinois passes "shall issue" concealed carry.

17. Well I know where they are not
But there is a place in the US that has strict licensing, definitely could not get straw purchased guns from the next state, or even the nearest state. Nice weather, should check it out. I considered it for the diving. One slight problem, they make DC look like Vermont. Strange thing is that the British Virgin Islands next door is almost crime free. Can't be USVI's lax gun laws.

21. Why does it matter where they come from?
Now, guess where the guns come from.

Why does that even matter?

Why is it that in all the places where you can actually freely buy the guns crime is less of a problem then in in Illinois?

Is Illinois just full of stupid people who need protecting from themselves?

2.  No rude toters there...only illegal ones.
453 still not a bad number considering the population of IL

3. Without opening the report, you either have a typo or you should recheck your math (351/437 => 80%)
Edited on Sat Oct-15-11 09:30 PM by LonePirate
On a per capita basis, those rates would suggest concealed carry laws leader to a greater murder percentage.

4. Louisiana and Maryland have higher handgun homicide rates than Illinois.
Edited on Sat Oct-15-11 09:35 PM by provis99
You're not helping your argument, dude.

By not reporting rates by population, not absolute numbers, you're slanting the figures.

And you are missing the larger point: which is handguns are responsible for most of the murders, so getting rid of handguns will lower the murder rate.

9. the link shows absolute numbers, not rates.
Illinois has roughly 50% more handgun murders than Louisiana and Maryland, but it has roughly twice the population of Maryland, and roughly three times the population of Louisiana. Hence, it has a much lower handgun murder rate than either Louisiana or Maryland.

20. here's the problem with your claim.
If Illinois had only 1 murder, but that murder was with a handgun, that would mean 100% of murders in Illinois are by handgun.
Illinois with 100% handgun murders is a lot safer than Louisiana with hundreds of murders, but with less than 100% of them committed by handguns.

You know Florida doesn't warrant your top three, two or first place award how?
Florida isn't even on that Table 20 file.
More than 23% are unknown.
See that footnote #3? Limited supplemental homicide data were received for Illinois.
DC's less than 25% of murders committed with handguns must mean those restrictive licensing laws are very effective. Of course DC isn't a state so it's not a valid comparison.
