Clerk kills would-be robber who grabbed daughter
Never mess with a momma bear and her cubs:

EAST NAPLES — A clerk at a landmark East Naples corner store shot and killed a man Tuesday as he attempted to rob the family-run shop and flee with her 1-year-old daughter.

10. I'd imagine that's what happened, but if so she's very lucky.
One little twitch while firing--maybe not leading a moving target just right--she misses the leg entirely, and he gets away.

11. Backstop problem: his knee is at the child's level.
Center of mass would have been the preferred target.

13. Simple biology
The aorta is the largest artery in the body and it connects to the femoral arteries which branch down each leg. The femoral artery connects with the popliteal artery at the knee. If the popliteal artery is damaged beyond repair, it is very likely the leg will not be able to survive. The popliteal artery carries blood to the leg and foot. Sever that artery and a person can bleed to death within a few minutes.

Battlefield Case Studies
Civil War (fatality)
• Leading Confederate General (Albert Sydney Johnston)
• KIA at Shiloh April 7, 1862
• Gen. Johnston’s Surgeon, Dr. David Yandell, directed that tourniquets be issued. During the battle, Gen. Johnston sustained an injury to the popliteal artery (located just above and behind the knee) and bled to death
• Tourniquet was in his pocket

There's a reason, as soldiers, we were taught how to use tourniquets and other basic hemorrhage control techniques.
