Clerk shoots, kills robber who grabbed her infant daughter and ran for door.
http://www.bnd.com/2011/10/19/1906554/clerk-kills-would-be-robber-who.html

TAMPA, Fla. -- A convenience store manager grabbed a gun from under the counter and shot a robber in the knee when the man scooped up the clerk's infant daughter, deputies and family members said Wednesday.

The robber tried to get into the cash register Tuesday afternoon at Del's 24-Hour Food Store in Naples but he couldn't open it. He grabbed a stroller with Elizabeth Easterly's 1-year-old in it and headed for the door, according to a sheriff's report and family members. Easterly shot the man and he died at a hospital.

"She's pretty much in shock, but she saved the baby," said Easterly's grandmother, Nancy Ackerman. "He was taking the baby outside, and she went over the top of the counter. I don't know how she did that because it's real high."

(More at link.)

There are those here who advocate shooting someone in the leg or other so-called minor place to stop them. Notice that this goblin was shot only once, in the knee, and died.
Yes, the word goblin fits someone who would try to grab a baby and escape.

1. I'm pretty much of a mind that anything a mother does to protect her child is legal.
That includes some very nasty possibilities.

I'm impressed that she went for the knee instead of his head.

3. Agree... I guess somehow that is a women thing, cause most of us guys would
have shot for the heart or head. (I don't condone killing of any kind, but snatch my child and you have crossed that line).

8. Lots of people are uncomfortable with the idea of shooting to kill, even when necessary...
...and they've been raised on a steady diet of Hollywood entertainment that says a shot to the arm or the leg is easy to make and not dangerous. When in fact it's exactly the opposite: harder to make and just as likely to be fatal. In this case, she hit an artery and the guy was probably dead by the time they got him to the ER.

I'm glad she did, but she got really lucky here.

10. Taking precautions to prevent criminally insane loonies from buying guns over the counter, for one.
And I personally don't see any need for fully automatic rifles with mega-clips. Their only conceivable purpose is killing large numbers of people efficiently.

We already do, unless you have a problem with due process. That is something Europe does not even do well. Some have no mechanism what so ever.

don't see any need for fully automatic rifles
fully automatic weapons have been effectively banned since 1934.

I am thinking you don't know much about firearms either.

Edit to add relevant law.

13. You're right. I know very little about guns or guns laws.
I just know that all too often for my comfort level I read about some crazy person with a gun shooting up some school, church, restaurant, or other public place.

14.  Full auto rifles are very tightly controlled by the Feds.
To legally get one requires, the written permission of the local sheriff, a 4 month or so background check by the feds, a $200 tax stamp per weapon, and anywhere between $8000 - $45000 ready per weapon. Also that tax stamp means that the BATFE can, without warning enter your home to inspect the locked storage of the weapon AND the weapon itself.

"Mega clips" need a better explanation of your term. Magazines vary from stock(7-18rds) to aftermarket 50-200rds depending on the weapon. My semi-auto M1919a4 uses 250 round belts.

Hope this helps.

5. Good riddance to a despicable excuse for a human being
And because he's dead, the taxpayers win too by not having to pay for his trial and incarceration.

12. Given that the criminal was holding the child, a shot to the leg
makes it logical that the mother was avoiding the torso or head in fear of hitting her child. If she intentional aimed for and hit the leg, while under the stress of watching her child being kidnapped and with the adrenaline dump that normally occurs in these situations, then I am very impressed.
