Florida: $5 million fine proposed for listing of gun owners
TALLAHASSEE -- Squeezed between the cop on the beat and the powerful National Rifle Association, the Senate leaned toward the NRA Wednesday, tentatively approving a bill that would ban government and private lists of gun owners.

"This bill will stop law-abiding gun owners from being profiled simply because they are gun owners," said the sponsor, Sen. Durell Peaden, R-Crestview.

The measure (SB 1152) puts an exclamation point on the U.S. Constitution's Second Amendment right to bear arms with criminal penalties and an unprecedented $5 million fine for anyone who knowingly violates its provisions.

1. Do you trust Jeb Bush with a database of gunowner names?
I don't. I could see them using that list to confiscate guns from anybody with an Arab or South Asian last name, not to mention that such a list could easily find its way into the hands of Baby Bush's Attorney General John Ashcroft.

2. You haven't heard?
It's OK to advocate more power for John Ashcroft as long as it has to do with guns.

6. Please clarify...
Do you believe that this bill gives more power to John Ashcroft and his gang of idiots, or leaves more in the hands of the citizens?

7. I was responding to
bluestateguy who said "such a list could easily find its way into the hands of Baby Bush's Attorney General John Ashcroft."

As for SB 1152, I'm undecided. I certainly don't want the government having lists of gun owners. But if say a newspaper decided they wanted to compile a list of all the gun owners in a town or state (good luck) and then publish it, do you want the government to stop them? I don't know, but I'm leaning toward no. I haven't actually read SB 1152, nor do I particularly care to since I don't live in Florida.

8. I stand corrected..
I think the less government interference we have in the media the better. Overall, the government compiling a list of gun owners for no other purpose than to have a list of gun owners on hand can't be good for gun owners.

5. I wouldn't trust a Bush with my grocery list!
Let alone a list of gun owners.

9. How about fines and jail time for removing legitimate voters
from the voting registrar? Or how about making it illegal for insurance companies to list doctors and hospitals it doesn't like?
