Gun owing home owner stops robbery.
Gun owing home owner stops robbery. Stranger under attack in the street. Robbery/mugging stopped and no one was killed. Easy access to guns stopped this attack IMHO. Another one for the good guys.

1. Girl, 3, thought loaded gun was Wii controller in fatal accident

Easy access to guns caused this accident. A dog is much better protection against home invasions then gun is.

Another useless death. Another win for the good guys?

3. My dogs lets me know when my gun is needed...

A combination of both will suit the purpose better than a single of either.

4. There are far fewer accidents than defensive gun uses.
There are far fewer firearm accidents every year than there are defensive gun uses.

But even if there weren't, why should people give up their right to keep and bear arms because of the negligence of others?

5. Reading is fundamental.
This was a street attack, not a home invasion.

Your story was from 9 March 2010 from the US but printed in the UK, a country with an infamous anti gun agenda.

7. A dog is much better protection???
When I lived in Tampa, I first had a Norwegian Elkhound. This dog was a fantastic watch dog. He would notice a stranger five house from where I lived and alarm. Obviously this is not needed in an urban area. If a person came to the door, he would bark and once the stranger was inside, he would lie on the floor and watch them until they got up to leave at which time he wouldn't let them. He never bit anyone but he sure scared the crap out of a lot of people.

After the Elkhound died in old age, I decided to get a female Labrador Retriever. She was a sweet, very intelligent animal who would alarm when someone came to the door but would hide behind me when I answered the door. She was also terrified by loud noises such as thunder or the burglar alarm. When the burglar alarm went off one night she hid in the bedroom while my daughter walked into the kitchen and found an intruder forcing the sliding glass door open. She pointed a large caliber revolver at him and he ran.

Where I live now with my daughter and son in law, we have two Boston Terriers. One barks at everything, one rarely alarms unless there is a problem. Neither would bite anyone.

In my opinion, a dog is not better than a firearm for protection. The combination of a good alarm dog, a firearm coupled with the ability to use it is the best defense for a home owner. It's also wise to have a burglar alarm, to take measures to make your house difficult to break into and a cell phone handy to call the police.

very friendly, intelligent and gentle dogs that make poor watchdogs.

11. My neighbor has one...it only howls at night.
I've never heard it give a "who to hell are you bark" once. It's just a big ole puppy that lets the kittens play all over it. At least my two wiener dogs will bark at strangers and other animals that don't belong....even if they do their barking while running away.

13. My husky almost never barks. She does howl .
She makes all sorts of vocalizations, and I've learned from these when she needs to go outside, when she really wants a piece of cheese, and when she's just hungry.

I used to raise huskies and I always said they would knock a robber over trying to get in the window before them.

16. That's the way it should be. Some would rather everyone be
defenseless to the strong or illegally armed than have the capability to fight back.
