Poll question: The overall ban question:
Edited on Tue Nov-01-11 07:07 PM by discntnt_irny_srcsm
It appears the voting in my other poll was a bit heavy on the ends and light in the middle. AWB Poll

An "Assault Weapon" is:
Semi-automatic rifles able to accept detachable magazines and two or more of the following:
* Folding or telescoping stock
* Pistol grip
* Bayonet mount
* Flash suppressor, or threaded barrel designed to accommodate one
* Grenade launcher (more precisely, a muzzle device which enables the launching or firing of rifle grenades)

Semi-automatic pistols with detachable magazines and two or more of the following:
* Magazine that attaches outside the pistol grip
* Threaded barrel to attach barrel extender, flash suppressor, handgrip, or suppressor
* Barrel shroud that can be used as a hand-hold
* Unloaded weight of 50 oz (1.4 kg) or more
* A semi-automatic version of an automatic firearm

Semi-automatic shotguns with two or more of the following:
* Folding or telescoping stock
* Pistol grip
* Fixed capacity of more than 5 rounds
* Detachable magazine

Which would you ban:

1. I would ban none of the above
I'm fine with laws how they are. I would not support any outright bans, and generally won't support more restrictions. Is it safe to assume that you are for assult weapons bans? If so, why. WHen was the last time you heard of somebody getting stabbed by a bayonett? Heard many stories of people on the run with grenade launchers. What difference does a pistol grip make (a pistol grip is designed to control recoil on full auto, and full auto is banned anyway. How is an unloaded weight of a 50oz pistol a threat. A big heavy pistol can not be concealed, easy, is uncomfortable to carry.

IS a threaded barrel really a danger? WHo attaches a handgrip to a threaded barrel? I've never heard of that. For the record, my glock has an accessory rail which could easily accepted a grip. Or if the government bans threaded barrels, I could thread one on a lathe in a day.

Basically my poing is why are these features chosen as dangerous? For example, why is a threaded barrel to accept a suppressor considered dangerous when supressors are tightly regulated? We don't need more stupid laws, so I will not support a ban, and a congressman who does is very unlikely to get my vote.

2. Since you asked...
...I am against banning "assault weapons".

Banning firearms with any of the features listed makes no sense whatsoever. Thanks for participating. :)

4. "Assault Weapons" are guns marketed to appeal to gunners' baser instincts.

Go into a gun shop, watch what the yahoos are slobbering over -- there's what one might call an "assault weapon."

If they ask to look at it and then pretend to be "clearing a room" or shooting several people -- it's an "assault" weapon.

If they ask for accessories -- hi cap mags, etc. -- for shooting lots of people, the marketers have done their job (which ain't hard when selling/designing products for those steeped in what many here call the "gun culture").

They are often found in compounds.

23. Actually good that things like this are written.
Other people see them and realize the second amendment people are not as crazy as some claim. In the 50's 60's anyone w/a motorcycle (Harley) was looked upon as a gang-member biker on an assault motor vechicle. The whole perception of motorcycle owners has changed. People realize that all kinds of main stream people own them.

6. Actually, back here in reality, they're the highest selling centerfire rifles in the country.
Your ability to hold iron-fast beliefs about things you don't understand, have never witnessed, and have absolutely no evidence for, is impressive. It's right up there with the people who are sure the Earth is 6,000 years old.

7. Seven people in this poll have voted to ban all firearms.
Shall we note this for the next time that someone here tells us that of course, NO ONE wants to ban all guns and that that's just paranoia?

8. I suspect that some of those seven people
thought the "poll" was deserving of whatever ridiculous answer they gave it, since all of the options bar one were designed to be ridiculous.

I really want the option of "all of the above", myself.

Have you tried it? If not, you should. You're a smart guy. As you probably guessed I'm just learning, but it's a lot of fun.

28. Today's militant gun prohibitionists have much in common with the temperance fanatics of the 1920s
They're likely to find themselves in bed with unsavory groups like the KKK.

29. Bans are stupid
Banning is an act against freedom, whether you're advocating for a ban on firearms, a ban on gay marriage, or continuing the ban on marijuana. In my opinion, 2 gay men should be able to get married, smoke weed together, and own whatever firearms they wish - as long as they don't smoke their pot and then go handle firearms.
