NICS; a good tool.
Edited on Fri Nov-25-11 02:50 PM by discntnt_irny_srcsm
Like firearms themselves, the NICS is only useful WHEN IT IS USED PROPERLY.

From the Mayors Against Illegal Guns:
- "...23 states and the District of Columbia have submitted fewer than 100 mental health records to the federal database."
- "Seventeen states submitted fewer than 10 mental health records, and..."
- "...four states haven’t submitted any records."

Ohio, which is not one of those 23 states, "...doesn’t have the infrastructure "to submit evidence of substance abuse outside of arrest and conviction records," the mayors group said."

Dayton Daily article

The Mayors also point out that many states and even federal agencies don't report some individuals that should be reported.

This sounds like a good place to start for those interested in making the world safer. New laws and grand ideas won't work without some good old fashioned follow-through and a lot of basic diligence in doing your damn job. State AGs and local DAs should be leading the campaign for plugging holes like these.

I'm not a big believer in the MAIG but facts are facts. This is info that ought to be acted on.

So tell me again, why is the ATF in Mexico?

1. The feds shouldn't pass any unfunded mandates
If they want the states to comply, then they should cover the cost.

As to the NICS, I don't have to submit to a background check as I have a CWL/CCW.

2. I'm uncertain whether provisions exist...
...for the feds to cover the costs but as this is a federal program, it should be federally funded.

3. During Senate Judiciary Committee Hearings
on S436, there was testimony that:

As a practical matter, Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.) questioned witness David Cuthbertson of the FBI’s Criminal Justice Information Services Division on the completeness of felony conviction records being provided to the NICS database. The exchange revealed that only 50 percent of arrest dispositions end up in the federal database. Sen. Sessions went on to infer that it should be of a higher priority that accurate data on convicted felons be available to NICS, explaining that there are already gun laws on the books that should be effectively enforced before the Congress contemplates additional restrictions on a constitutional right.

If only half the felonies are in the database, the system needs to be fixed.

4. Congress...
...is frequently just the sounds of 535 knees jerking.

After the VA Tech shootings there was outrage that someone with such a troubled history was able to buy firearms. This is primarily why. Politicians make names for themselves by getting media attention both during campaigns and when speaking to gather support for bills they write or sponsor. Appropriating money doesn't make you popular.

This is something to really consider when voting next. Has that candidate in his/her last term actually done something that made a difference? Or have they just been moving air and wasting ink?

5. It s just a self perpetuating system
Pass a law, make the states fund the program, the states are too broke or fight the law based on unfunded mandates, so the law is not effectively enforced, so introduce another bill that will make another law that goes nowhere.

Wash, Rinse, Repeat.

Yet, about 90% of the knuckle heads get reelected.

8. I say...
...examine the records and let the chips fall where they may. If anything, I would police my own party with the utmost diligence.

9. You can pursue that policy in the primary stage
You don't have to vote against the Democrat in the general election, but you can vote for a different Democrat in the primary. I frequently do.
