Dog shoots man
"Man's best friend," my ass:

A man was recovering Wednesday after being shot over the weekend by his dog.

A 46-year-old Brigham City man and a friend were duck hunting Sunday about 8:30 a.m. on the north end of the Great Salt Lake near the bird refuge, about 10 miles west of Brigham City.

The two had their canoe-like boat in a shallow marsh area when the man got out of the boat to either set up or collect decoys. He laid his 12-gauge shotgun across the bow of the boat, said Box Elder County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Kevin Potter.

After the man got out of the boat, a dog inside the vessel jumped up on the bow and stepped on the gun. The gun fired and shot the man in the buttocks.

1. Not the first time that's happened, either.
And this guy wouldn't be pulling birdshot out of his ass if he'd observed basic safety rules, like unloading the weapon if it doesn't have a safety.

Although this does remind me of a story years back about a man who was sort of killed by his cat. He was angry at the cat, and went to try and club it with the butt of his shotgun. The gun was loaded, and went off, killing the man instantly. Karma.

Actually, my cats are the reason I keep my gun in a safe. They can't be trusted.

9. For ferrets, multiply that by an order of magnitude
Unless you want find your entire gun collection under the living room couch, with any rubber furniture covered in bite marks.

16. Ahh, I remember well the joys of ferrets.
Including having to dig out the couch every time I ran out of socks.

5. People who leave loaded guns where dogs can step on them cause people to be shot.
Especially with shotguns, since most shotguns don't have firing pin safeties.

10. And you'd be wrong
I actually tend to dislike dogs as a rule, with exceptions for dogs who belong to friends and understand where my rightful place in the pack structure is. Additional problem is that I spent several years as a volunteer at a wolf sanctuary, and I get really frustrated with dogs because they're so stupid by comparison.

The point of my observation was that firearms are inanimate objects; guns don't shoot people of their own accord, but only when they are mishandled by humans, and when a firearm discharges as a result of a dog stepping on it, that's because the human owner of the firearm was careless. I'm happy the only person who got hurt was the owner of the shotgun himself.
