Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is set to announce legislation today to crack down on corrupt gun dealers.

She wants to toughen penalties to reduce the flow of illegal firearms into and around the state.

The bill comes after state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman charged 10 dealers with selling weapons without background checks at gun shows statewide.

1. Interesting considering she ran on a pro gun platform.
Only way the up-staters would vote for a democrat.

2. And, IIRC, she immediately stabbed them in back on the issue.
Politician=Liar, or thus the correlation suggests.

4. It's slightly more complicated than that.
She was elected to the House from an upstate district that would certainly never have elected an anti-gun politician. She was appointed to the Senate to fill Hillary Clinton's seat when HC became Secretary of State. Gillibrand was then re-elected to the Senate, but certainly not on a gun-rights platform: by that time she was already buddying up with Chuck Schumer and Carolyn McCarthy. In other words, once her constituency became the whole state rather than an upstate district, her support for gun rights evaporated like rainwater on hot asphalt.

I would be interested to see what the legislation actually is. The article is short on specifics, merely alluding to increased penalties.

6. McCarthy threatened to primary Gillibrand
That's when Schumer brought in the Brady Campaign. Working together, they flipped her to the other side.

8. Didn't take much flipping, I imagine.

I picture it something like this: "You're now a senator from a state with an ironclad Democratic majority and a long history of strict gun control. Forget your NRA 'A' rating. You now have two choices: toe our version of the party line or start giving last rites to the cooling corpse of your political career."

New York politics: you gotta laugh to keep from crying.

3. I guess it's just that I tend to read that as 'New York City', in which case there are few or none.
But that means statewide.

I don't think you'll find any problems with this. I'm fine with it. Regulating the Point of Sale is one way to trim some unlawful transfers. Nothing wrong with that.

5. Long on rhetoric, short on specifics.
But that post does bring up an interesting point. Senator Gillibrand wants to crack down on corrupt gun dealers. If a "dealer" is breaking the law, he/she is in violation of existing federal laws and can be prosecuted under those laws. So, why are new laws needed? If the problem applies to a state issue, NYs background checks at gun shows, what legislation is needed at the federal level?

The link you posted also states Schneidermann charged 10 "dealers" with selling weapons without background checks. Were those "dealers" licensed by the federal government? You posted a similar story http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=118x483900 where most of those busted were private citizens trying to sell their individual weapons.

Seems as though the story is getting more convoluted as the posts go by and people trying to sell at gun shows have evolved from sellers to vendors to dealers in order to sensationalize the story.

9. This is the senator who confessed to sleeping with rifles under her bed.
Assisted by an attorney general in a city where ownership of any firearm is draconian.

I predict her legislation will be against private sales and choke NY gun shows even more.
