Did the U.S. Government Supply the Gun that Killed Jaime Zapata?
Operation Fast and Furious—the Arizona-based federal gun-tracking program that led to the death of a U.S. agent at the hands of Mexican criminals—could be underway in Texas, too, and may have led to the death of Laredo immigration agent Jaime Zapata.

snip

According to an October 2011 investigation by Houston NBC affiliate KPRC, employees at a Houston gun shop named Carter’s Country alleged that they were asked by Houston ATF agents in 2006 to sell guns to suspicious purchasers and notify ATF so agents could observe the purchases. Carter’s Country employees say they complied with the request, adding that at least 6 of the 16 times they called during a suspicious sale, ATF agents never showed, but told Carter’s Country to make the sale anyway.

snip

And what of the murder of special agent Zapata, who was shot and killed in Mexico in February 2011? That gun was traced back to gun dealers near Dallas.

How many more Brian Terrys and Jamie Zapatas do there have to be before someone who facilitated this goes to jail or at least loses there job? When is the truth of these operations finally going to be revealed? We are told there is no money to help those who are losing their jobs but we sure as hell got $10 million in stimulus money along with $416.5 million, in the last year alone to propagate this bullshit.

Go ahead and ignore the situation, it ain't going away.

2. I'm sure one of the anti gunner's will be along
shortly to mention how we are persecuting the ATF and that because we got some indictments (Note, not convictions) that the deaths of American law enforecement agents and the deaths of Mexican citizens, all of it is justified.

4. I can imagine the ATF agents creaming their pants
As they took that serial number to the Dallas gun shop to bust the owner for responsibility for Zapata's death.

And then the owner says "We tried to stop the sale, but you told us to go ahead with it."

I bet the owner was keeping evidence, or they would have just railroaded him anyway.

The ATF tends to do that.

5. I know this joke...
...The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), the ATF, the FBI, and
the CIA are all trying to prove that they are the best at
apprehending criminals. The President decides to give them a test.
He releases a rabbit into a forest and each of them has to catch
it.

The CIA goes in. They place animal informants throughout the forest.
They question all plant and mineral witnesses. After three months of
extensive investigations they conclude that rabbits do not exist.

The ATF goes in. Their armoured battering ram gets stuck in the mud,
several agents are killed and injured some by rabbits and some friendly
fire, and they have to call in the US Marshall's Service to get them
out. The Marshals respond promptly by readjusting the deadly force
policy to include the shooting on sight of anything with long ears.

The FBI goes in. After two weeks with no leads they burn the forest,
killing everything in it, including the rabbit, and they make no
apologies. The rabbit had it coming.

The LAPD goes in. They come out two hours later with a badly beaten
bear. The bear is yelling: "Okay! Okay! I'm a rabbit! I'm a rabbit!"

12. Actually I do support ATF. They could have done better in this case, but I don't want this mistake

to impede their efforts to control guns, gun trafficking, Randy Weavers of the world, etc.

I suspect you were against ATF long before the F&F sting was blown out of proportion by gun lovers and right wingers trying to bring down Obama for doing what he can to enforce gun laws.

15. we support their efforts when
they are enforcing the law. You are supporting the ATF violating the law. There is a difference.
Blown out of proportion? Read the real media like McClatchy, stratfor.com, Latin American Herald, etc.

17. No, I'm supporting them trying to stop gun trafficking. It only worked 30% or so in F&F so far.

I don't think you can see the truth on anything involving guns.

18. how has it worked?
Does it bother you that our gun laws are being enforced by people who are too stupid to have a detailed plan and means to track the guns once they enter Mexico?

13. I though criminals could always get guns -- I suspect the Mexican cartels would have no problem

getting guns from other sources. You guys just hate the ATF.

14. given that the cartels are a
$50 billion a year industry, I am surprised they are not making their own. Why not? They build their own submarines.

19. See? See? It WAS a gun shop! BATF proved it. Again and again....
Edited on Mon Dec-12-11 04:36 PM by SteveM
From the Observer:

"employees at a Houston gun shop named Carter’s Country alleged that they were asked by Houston ATF agents in 2006 to sell guns to suspicious purchasers and notify ATF so agents could observe the purchases. Carter’s Country employees say they complied with the request, adding that at least 6 of the 16 times they called during a suspicious sale, ATF agents never showed, but told Carter’s Country to make the sale anyway."

Personal note: I'm surprised to see the Texas Observer take up this issue; so many pro-gun-control in the media WILL NOT deal with these BATF operations.

20. I dunno. I wonder if Holder sent a condolence letter
to Zapata's family with an explanation on the gun being allowed to walk. Somehow I doubt it. But the gun haters who frequent this site don't seem to have the same vitriol when the government allows the firepower to get into the wrong hands versus when an armed citizen protects him/herself, their home, or family.

It also looks as though the gungeon with the advent of DU3 is going to be a different animal. According to my reading of the rules, post such as the OP are no longer going to be allowed. Something that does not reflect favorable to the Democratic Party will simply be "judged" as not acceptable.

We'll see I guess.

Have a good one and Merry Christmas.
