The strongest political weapon there is
P-I Focus: The strongest political weapon there is

JOAN BURBICK

Political theater thrives on flashy stage props. On April 17, as Vice President Dick Cheney held in his hands a flintlock rifle at the National Rifle Association annual convention in Pittsburgh, the room shook with deafening applause. A gift from the NRA, the rifle was no ordinary gun or badass military weapon from Rambo movies. A flintlock was the honored gun of revolutionary patriots. The gun of our founding fathers. The gun of red-white-and-blue America. Cheney and the 3,000 NRA members in the room were freedom fighters, tireless and true.

-------------------------snip______________________
Guns entered national politics in the 1970s. What is called the gun rights movement sprang into motion against a waning civil rights movement and a growing push for women's rights. One organizer of gun rights from the early '70s put it bluntly when I interviewed him. Conservatives were taking a beating. Something was needed to "reverse the flow in the pipes" of the civil rights movement. The social movements based on the rights of women and minorities had bolstered the Democratic Party. Conservatives who had fought against the gains of civil rights and the Equal Rights Amendment needed to counter. Enter the gun.

There is no beyond the propaganda, to me, this is what progressives are really against. The real tyrants are the gun whores like Dick Cheney who keeps us pinned down with his 30 machine guns of hated firing at all that is good.

8. Is the entire bill of rights applicable in your scheme?
Shall we talk about freedom of speech and limiting it to a soap box on the corner or a primitive printing press?

11. interesting point...
some antigunners say that advances in technology have made the 2nd amendment obsolete, so they justify their infringment on the 2nd on this. However if the 2nd amendment were truely obsolete they should be seeking to repeal it.

Anyways, by that same token people dont have freedom of speech online, or on radio, or TV.

After all advances in technology have made the first amendment obsolete.

7. Interesting though that the Soviet Union, Apartheid, the Shah, Warsaw Pact
all fell with relatively little bloodshed. Also interesting that a supposedly freedom loving gun"enthusiast" is quoting a murdering tyrant.

knew what he was talking about. I cant atleast give him that.

As for your comment, "Interesting though that the Soviet Union, Apartheid, the Shah, Warsaw Pact, all fell with relatively little bloodshed."

Yeah I suppose they did, except for the millions of people who died because of thier governments actions. :eyes:

14. The actual revolutions killed less people than a month of gun death in US
Edited on Tue Jun-15-04 09:07 PM by billbuckhead
And please don't forget about America's 230 years of genocide that filled even Hitler with awe and admiration.

Gee I forgot about Iraq, a proud moment of indiscriminate murder, rape and torture of even innocent children brought to America by the NRA and gun owners since y'all are always taking credit that gun "enthusiasts" put Bush in power. Even though almost a million more Americans voted against this misadministration, OUR EXCELLENT CONSITUTION HAS SOMETHING CALLED ELECTORAL COLLEGE THAT ALLOWED THE LOSER TO WIN and the genocide to begin.

17. I been trying to Google it
It would come as no surprise that the world's freest and most humane superpower wouldn't mention guns.
What if American states and individuals want to join the EU. Richard Holbrook said the day is coming when borders will be meaningless. In your lifetime the EU Consitution may become the law of this land by public acclaim, like the Soviet Union falling. If we Democratically decide to do that, will you shoot us?

18. The famous Charlton Heston speech
Because you choose to own guns- affirmed by no less than the Bill of Rights - you embrace a view at odds with the cultural war lords. If that is the outcome of cultural war, and you are the victims, I can only ask the obvious question. What will become of the right itself? Or other rights not deemed acceptable by the thought police? What other truth in your heart will you disavow with your hand?

Rank-and-file Americans wake up every morning, increasingly bewildered and confused at why their views make them lesser citizens. The message gets through; Heaven help the God fearing, law-abiding, Caucasian, middle-class Protestant-or even worse, evangelical Christian, Midwestern or Southern- or even worse, rural, apparently straight-or even worse, admitted heterosexuals, gun-owing-or even worse, NRA-card-carrying, average working stiff-or even worse, male working stiff-because, not only don't you count, you are a down-right obstacle to social progress. Your voice deserves a lower decibel level, your opinion is less enlightened, your media access is insignificant, and frankly, mister, you need to wake up, wise up, and learn a little something from your new-America and until you do, would you mind shutting up?"

Charlton Heston
President of the National Rifle Association

19. George Wallace's evil political spawn
I remember seeing films of George Wallace's speeches and they sounded a lot like that. Guys were waving rebel flags--and flying the swastika from the balcony.
