I not an NRA-political fan as of later years.
Does anyone know the roots of the NRA? They started out as non-political, strictly training. When gun ownership became a political that's when they responded by researching the issues. They were a good idea that sort of molded. They need less republican and conservatives on their board and more libertarians and democrats. Yes, good to see some pro second amendment democrats are out there.

NRA is nothing, do you know how many other second ammendment support groups out there, national and state? JFPO, SAS, SAF, SCOPE. There's even second amendment support groups in Canada and England.

1. Yes, I am old enough to remember when the NRA was mainly...
...just a national association of people that went hunting and fishing. A lot of that is still there. They have taken a shot at separating the activism side from the hunting/fishing side but could do a better job of it, in my opinion.

4. me too..
My dad used to be be a member back in the 70's.. but hasn't re-enlisted since their so called "non-partisan" organization became an organizing tool for the "bubbas" and conserva-nazis. He still has some of the old mags, and they really were geared toward the sportsman.

I still say we need a left-leaning gun owners association to counter the NRA.

2. Here's somthing
http://www.jointogether.org/gv/issues/problem/history/nra/

Its from join togeather so we all know the biasies of the organization.

The founders of the NRA (William Conant Church and General George Wingate) (http://www.saneguns.org/gunlobby/nra_earlyyears.html) were participants in the American Civil war and I believe that both were Union Oficers. Is this correct? If this is the case, it can be implied to mean that 1. the teaching of marksmanship was generaly concidered a good thing by the victors. 2. There was support in the late 19th century on the part of the states and federal goverment to encourage frimialiarity with firarms. 3. The founders of the NRA would have almost certanly believed that civilian firearms ownership was not immoral. Remember: these are not bitter ex-secessionists.

However without an examination of the founder's papers, letters, journals, and speaches (along with newspaper articles of the era) it is not possible to determine their position on the applicability of the second amendment to citizens individualy.

5. "second amendment support groups in Canada and England"
No! Shoorly not foreigners -- most especially those damned meddling Canadians -- having and expressing opinions about how things should be done in the USofA!! Heavens to betsy, and dog forbid.

I do hope that no one will be trying to associate moi with those rabid right-wing loons. Oh yeah, that's what they are up here, and that's what any sane decent person -- one of the sane decent people who make up the overwhelming majority of Canadians -- will tell you. Trust me. I'm always right and I never lie.

No, really. I mean, surely you realize that you're talking about things like freedominion.ca, right? Ewwww. ("Dominion" was the name given to colonies that gained independence within the "Empire", Canada having been the first. How convenient that it also, now, carries overtones of the fascist militancy found in the US.)

Ask google for "free dominion" "second amendment"
http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&lr=&cr=countryCA&ie=UTF-8&safe=off&q=+site:www.freedominion.ca+%22free+dominion%22+%22second+amendment%22
and here's the first thing on the list, after clicking on the appropriate thread in the forum listing:

Gay gun advocates start 'Pink Pistols' chapter in Michigan

... Good for them. Nice to see a small faction supporting the 2nd amendment instead of finding ways to destroy it. If the sodomite political agenda showed this repect for ALL the constitution and the democracy it protects they could earn my respect.

As it is now I have nothing but contept for a political lobby that would conspire to commit charter and constitutional fraud........as Egal has.
(Egale - French for "equal" - is "equality for gays and lesbians everywhere", a leading rights advocacy group.)

Y'd almost think you'd wandered into that free ... other place, eh?

Well ... shoot.
http://www.freedominion.ca/about.htm

Free Dominion is a Canadian conservative political news forum conceptually modeled after the ground-breaking American website Free Republic. Free Dominion is the world's first proof the power of Free Republic can be imported and applied in any country where there is a desire for liberty. There is now a growing Free Britannia in the U.K., and conservative patriots in other countries are sure follow with comparable websites of their own.
Who'd 'a thunk it?!

6. NMLRA
Edited on Thu Jun-17-04 06:24 PM by realisticphish
I'm a member of the NMLRA (National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association), and have been for years. I'm NOT a member of the NRA, though; the NMLRA has done a good job of staying apolitical; most people involved just want to hunt, target shoot, and just have a good time. There is some political rhetoric, since quite a few are members of both, but its easy to ignore. Also, keep in mind that not every member of the NRA is Charleton Heston. I am suprised by the number of moderates, and downright liberals, that can be found in its membership

7. OH! I thought you meant the NMLRA...
...the National Man Love Rifle Association. The one advocating that men should be able to marry their rifle.
