CORALVILLE - Police are unsure what triggered the chase that ended with the shooting death of a 24-year-old Cedar Rapids man Thursday within 200 feet of Wickham Elementary School.

Some children still were on the playground when the shooting occurred. Police say Kyle A. Wasson had a gun, and they are unsure whether he or North Liberty Police Chief Jim Warkentin fired the fatal shot.

Wasson was wanted for an alleged probation violation that could have sent him to prison for a maximum five years under a previous felony drug conviction, online court records show.

why on Earth was this guy able to get his hands on a gun?

At the risk of sounding trite, he was able to get a gun because he was a criminal; he was willing to break multiple laws to get one. There's a strong possibility the person who gave or sold it to him knew of his criminal history and was therefore also a criminal.
