Man killed as chase ends near school playground

Students outside hear gunshots

CORALVILLE -
Police are unsure what triggered the chase that ended with the shooting death of a 24-year-old Cedar Rapids man Thursday within 200 feet of Wickham Elementary School.

Some children still were on the playground when the shooting occurred. Police say Kyle A. Wasson had a gun, and they are unsure whether he or North Liberty Police Chief Jim Warkentin fired the fatal shot.

Wasson was wanted for an alleged probation violation that could have sent him to prison for a maximum five years under a previous felony drug conviction, online court records show.

1. Chase him onto the school playground ...
then we can arrest him on weapons charges on school property. Oops, just shot him, instead.

2. In Iowa....
No state law exists requiring background checks for all gun sales at gun shows.

No statute exists to mandate statewide coordination between federal, state and local law enforcement activities concerning firearm trafficking.

No state law exists requiring that all guns used in the commission of a crime and recovered by law enforcement be traced to their original owners if the original ownership cannot be determined by other means.

3. To answer your question, CO
why on Earth was this guy able to get his hands on a gun?

At the risk of sounding trite, he was able to get a gun because he was a criminal; he was willing to break multiple laws to get one. There's a strong possibility the person who gave or sold it to him knew of his criminal history and was therefore also a criminal.
