NY: Canned hunts win key fight
Edited on Mon Sep-08-03 07:59 AM by Superfly
<snip>

New York's organized sportsmen can give themselves a collective pat on the back for convincing Gov. George A. Pataki to veto legislation that would have outlawed virtually all enclosed shooting preserves in the state.

Members of the state Conservation Council often have been at odds with Pataki, particularly over his stand on gun-control issues, but he stood tall when he turned thumbs down on the so-called "canned hunt" bill.

Currently, the state bars commercial hunting operations that offer participants a chance to shoot or spear non-native big-game animals that are "confined in box, pen, cage or similar container of less than 10 acres."

<snip>

But the bill passed by the state Senate and Assembly in mid-June would have done away with the acreage clause, effectively prohibiting for-fee hunts within any enclosure, even those spanning thousands of acres.

<snip>

What's the difference between a "canned hunt" and slaughterhouses?

1. Another blow struck for stupidity
"What's the difference between a "canned hunt" and slaughterhouses?"
People who work in a slaughterhouse don't delude themselves into thinking they're mighty hunters.

By the way, fly...is there some reason you can't show us a link for any of these stories?

10. Thank you, sir!
It was just a natural evolution of our relationship as she is my best friend and confident. Plus, she has a killer body (which helps)!

3. And BTW...
I agree. No self-respecting hunter engages in these kinds of "hunts". You might as well go to a petting zoo and shoot a goat.

The true reward in hunting comes after careful planning, preparation, stalking, and finally deciding whether or not to pull the trigger. Hunters engaging in canned hunts will never walk away from targeted game, whereas true hunters can, and often do.

4. No respect
I find it difficult to restrain my anger at these fools.

This is just killing for killings sake.

I'm off home to hunt my rabbit.

5. never underestimate
the venality of the modern hunter. Here in WI, hunters finally got their chance to blow away the dangerous and wily Mourning dove. course they have to shoot at the slower doves rather than waste the non-indiginous starling or english sparrow.

9. Doves taste delicious
and are a very difficult to hunt. They fly at mach 1 and are the size of a pizza roll.

I love dove hunting.

17. I could care less...
...if they banned canned hunts, but at least they are killing their own meat. The real hypocrites, in my book, are the people who are against hunting but see no problem with going down to the supermarket and picking up a nice juicy t-bone.
