On Thursday, September 9, 2003, at 13:00 (Israel time), three Israel Air Force F-15 fighter planes will take off from the "Radom" Polish Air Force Base, and fly over the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp. The fly over is taking place to honor the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust.
It should be noted that before the flight crews departed from Israel, the Staff of Yad Vashem searched for the names of Jews who were murdered in the concentration camp on 4.9.43, exactly 60 years before the upcoming fly over. The names of the murdered will be in the fighter aircraft as they fly over Auschwitz-Birkenau.
Before the fighter planes left Israel, Commander of the expedition, Brigadier General, Amir Eshel, stated that "We are flying over the camp of horrors - we have risen from the ashes of the millions of victims and carry their silent cry. We salute their herrorism, and swear to be a shield to the Jewish people and their country, Israel."
The fly over is taking place within the framework of the "witnesses in uniform" program.
