PA Chairman Arafat says accepts Prime Minister Abbas resignation
http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/337263.html

Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat has
accepted Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas' resignation
letter Saturday afternoon.

Abbas (Abu Mazen) submitted his
resignation in a letter to
Palestinian Authority Chairman
Yasser Arafat earlier on
Saturday.

Arafat announced the acceptance
of Abbas' resignation letter in
comments made to more than 80
Palestinian legislators.

In a speech to the Palestinian Legislative
Council in Ramallah shortly after submitting
his resignation, Abbas blamed Arafat, Israel,
the U.S. and the Arab media for his
government's failure and for undermining his
work as prime minister.

In the speech, Abbas blamed Arafat for
undermining his work and for torpedoing his
efforts to run the government.

.........................................................

so abbas blames

a. arafat
b. israel
c. US
D. arab media

too bad he didnt blame himself for failing to crack down
on hamas.

2. See comment on the other thread

This is less significant than it appears

The so-called Road Map to peace was designed to lead to a dead end. Abbas, who appeared to be the designated drvier, was really the degignated fall guy.

When reality doesn't conform to Israel being perfect and right, reality can go get fucked can't it.

11. Partially, yes...
because at the same time that those propaganda videos were being created, the settlements were expanding elsewhere.

It's like the economy. As Paul Krugman said: "It isn't getting better, it's just getting worse more slowly."

12. Israel and the US were most certainly to blame...
Abbas became PM with no power. If he was going to succeed at making peace, he needed the palestinian people behind him. Israel's actions made it worse for the Palestinians, not better. Because Israel failed to help improve the situation, Abbas never gained the support of the Palestinian people.

With no real opposition to Sharon's actions, the US of course aided this. And the Arab media, with its sometimes shocking extremism, is almost always partially to blame when it comes to the I/P situation.

13. There can be no peace for as long as Arafat is in charge
Arafat has never changed from the man that plotted the Munich Olympic massacre in 1972.

When the IDF raided his headquarters in Ramallah last year, they found invoices that clearly showed (even to this sceptic) that Arafat had been funding the manufacture of suicide belts.

The resignation of Abu Mazen was brought about by Arafat's refusal to disband the Al-Aqsa militia and to give Mazen control over the security apparatus. Arafat had little intentions of seeking the terrorists. Why would he? He is as involved in terrorism as bin Laden!

15. Well, IndianaGreen...
my opinion of Arafat is very low, yet i have yet to see real evidence that he plotted terror attacks on Israelis as president of the PA. Do you have any?

16. Same here...
I asked the same question you just did of someone else (not IG) a while back and for my trouble got given a bunch of links to the conservative media and the IDF site, neither of which I see as being reliable sources for information. If IG was a sceptic before, then I'm sure she's got something from somewhere a bit more trustworthy. As it is, my gut feeling is that Arafat probably has been involved with terrorism during his term as President of the PA, whether it be directly or indirectly. I agree with IG's comment about the resignation of Abu Mazen being due to those things, but it's also important to remember that Israel put him in an untenable position by not giving him anything to show the Palestinian people in the way of progress or concessions...

I think removing both Sharon and Arafat and replacing them with moderates who have some level of popular support would go a long way to starting a peace process that will actually end up achieving something...

Violet...

21. I agree completely...
that replacing both with moderates would be an excellent action to take. Of course, as we saw with Abbas, political strength and the backing of some independent Palestinians is needed.

17. I checked that so called evidence pretty throughly
It's a lame con job, Niger-uranium style. Don't take it seriously (unless somebody presents compelling evidence to refute that statement I just made).

For example, one guy supposed to be receiving funds was actually dead at the time he was signing cheques. Not to mention the fact he was also a doctor with no proven (or even alleged) connection to terrorism.

That entire "dossier" of crap was basically dropped right after Sharon took it to the US. Nobody serious talks about it much.

22. Cost of a suicide bomb belt: about $350.
From Australia:

Young Palestinians queue up for martyrdom
By Paul McGeough
April 13 2002

Hamas sources have priced a complete suicide-bombing mission at up to $US4500 ($A8400). But what Israel is calling an "invoice of terror" - an Al Aqsa Martyrs' Brigade document recovered from the wreckage of Arafat's headquarters - costed a suicide bomb belt at 700 sheckels (about $A350).

http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2002/04/12/1018333418306.html

I do remember the invoices for suicide belts found in Arafat's headquarters. It was reported by the Israeli press, including the liberal Ha'aretz, at the time it happened.

An Arafat spokesperson did not deny that the invoices were true, but said that Arafat had no knowledge of what was going on in a room next to his office.

24. Interesting...
the question is: Did the Israelis exxagerate the evidence against Arafat? How much of it was fabricated? By the IDF's prior record, I cannot be sure that they did not.

18. Well stated. IG
Arafat is a major disappointment. Why would a man who has lived his entire life watching for an assassin who could be waiting around any corner act now like he can take it all with him?

He should have done something about the militias when he had the opportunity. It was a lack of will on his part. What a missed opportunity. Abba Eban was right.
