Hamas Founder Survives Israeli Missile StrikeSat Sep 6, 3:08 PM ET
By Shahdi al-Kashif and Nidal al-MughrabiGAZA (Reuters) - Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, the spiritual leader of the Islamic militant group Hamas, escaped an Israeli air strike with minor wounds on Saturday by leaving a house moments before an F-16 fighter jet struck it with a missile.
The wheelchair-bound Yassin was slightly wounded in the hand and shoulder in the attack in the heart of Gaza City. The strike wounded about 15 Palestinians, including six children, and sparked protests by tens of thousands of people across Gaza.
"You will pay the price for this crime," Yassin told a crowd of angry supporters after praying at a mosque, aiming his comments at Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.
"The Israeli people will pay a dear price for this crime...Our people will not raise the white flag. The (Israeli) entity will be removed."
Supporters outside the mosque waved Hamas flags, chanting: "We will sacrifice our blood for Yassin." One militant shouted through a loudspeaker as Yassin was treated in hospital straight after the attack: "Sharon, your head is now wanted."
