Explosion at Israeli army base

Three people have been killed and dozens wounded in an explosion near an army base in central Israel, police say.

The blast took place near the Tzrifin Israeli Defence Force base outside Tel Aviv, at a spot where soldiers gather to hitch-hike home on leave.

Police have described it as an attack by Palestinian militants. It is not clear whether it is a suicide attack.

This is the first apparent militant attack inside Israel since Israeli forces at the weekend tried to assassinate the spiritual leader of Hamas, Sheikh Ahmed Yassin.

David Baker, a spokesman for Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, said: "The attack today is further indication that the Palestinian Authority is doing absolutely nothing whatsoever to reign in terrorists or to dismantle the terror infrastructure in their areas".

Additionally, the suicide bombings keep the Likud in power, therefore destroying almost any hope of a peaceful until the Likud party loses power. That is unlikely to happen unless the suicide bombings mostly end.

All this is aside from the horridness of targeting innocent civilians in the way that Hamas does. The slaugther of innocent people is very rarely justified, and in this case it certainly is not.
