UN calls for pressure to force Israel to bring down separation wall
complete title:
UN conference calls for pressure to force Israel to bring down separation wall.

http://www.un.org/apps/news/story.asp?NewsID=8183&Cr=palestin&Cr1=rights

Civil society organizations have committed themselves to pressure their governments to condemn Israel's "separation wall" in the occupied West Bank as part of its pattern of illegal settlement activity, according to a plan of action adopted by the United Nations International Conference of Civil Society in Support of the Palestinian People.

-snip-

Israel says the barrier, a complex series of walls, barriers, trenches and fences within the occupied West Bank that has nearly encircled and isolated some Palestinian towns and villages, is a security operation necessary to keep out suicide bombers.

2. THINK about it
Your comment seems quite puerile.

Please Google a search on 'UN resolutions against Israel.'

Whay are there so many and why are they so damning?

Perhaps you are on the wrong side.

The UN would seem to think so.

12. me too!
This so called peace keeping group has done nothing to censure and terrorist organization be it those who attack Israel or those who attack India or those who bomb tourists in Bali, kosher butcher shops and school bussess in France.

Have they said one word about slave trade, wars in Africa, starvation in Ethiopia? What a shame for what was once the hope of the world.

Even * is back there asking for help. Although, in my opinion, he doesn't deserve it, and Iraqi extremists have bombed the UN office and killed UN workers, including the UN's representative, Sergio Vieira de Mello, I hope the UN and the coalition can work together and help the innocent majority of Iraqis.

16. The problem is that all of you speak without any knowledge...
Uh, the UN has indeed done its part to censure those responsible for the Bali-bombings and suicide-bombings on civilian targets in Israel. As for the slave trade, wars in Africa, or starvation in Ethiopia, you make the same mistake as others here who make it a habit of bashing the UN without holding the slightest bit of knowledge about what the UN does and doesn't do, or what its limitations are...

Hey, you forgot to have a bitch about how the Khmer Rouge wasn't kicked out of the UN even after the international community became fully aware of the extent of the genocide committed in Cambodia. Or had a bit of a complain about a lack of action about genocide when it happens and how rogue hold-out nations refused to ratify the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. No. Wait. We can't mention that stuff! After all, it was the US that not only refused to abstain on the vote over the Cambodian seat in the UN, but strongly supported the Khmer Rouge retaining membership, and was it 30 or 40 years before the US finally ratified the Genocide convention and only then after adding conditions that made the convention worse than useless, because the opt-out clause they added made it that any country accused by the US of genocide could also use the opt-out clause. Then again, we'd still be waiting for US ratification if Bonzo hadn't gone to Bitburg...

23. Is that what you think?
Or are you saying that some states and groups think like that? If it's the latter, I agree with you, but if yr saying that's what you actually think, then I strongly disagree. It's never okay to kill innocent people to make a point...

36. The same UN that helped create Israel?
The same that if hypothetically didn't exist, we would have seen major wars in that region during the Cold War era that would have had the Soviets and the US vying for control without restraint. The same UN that has the "Big Veto" sitting on the UN security council to protect Israel from flagarant violations of human rights and resolutions.

Yeah...that ol' one sided UN. Mean ol' bastards.

21. No...
There is never any justification for the killing of children in any conflict. If the only way any group or state can make a point is by the killing of children, then the point they're trying to make mustn't have much merit to start with, imo...

9. The wall has graffiti sprayed on it every day now
Usually it is kids doing it. 'the wall must fall' is a popular one.

Naturally, they have to dodge bullets in order to do it.

11. And that surprises you
It IS a security wall. They could be planting bombs and not spray painting. Frankly, they shouldn't be allowed that close.

28. Security
From a distance, how can you tell how old someone is? Is he a noncombatant?

Those are the choices you have to make when terrorists try to blow you up at every turn.

So, like it or not, the wall is like any security checkpoint. If you violate the rules there, you put yourself at risk. Israeli guards who allow spray painting might not live to learn from this.

Oh-kay...

And you've been told by many people in other threads that this wall is NOT like any security checkpoint. Why do you keep on repeating the same thing over and over knowing it's not true? That wall is going deep into Palestinian territory, Muddle. Why don't you have any problems with that?

24. Does Israel
have enough IDF members to stand guard 24/7 to keep the baddies far away from this long wall? What a problem solver you are, or do you propose to offer your services and bring your friends? How many friends do you have?

29. Actually it does
Modern technology is a great aid in making that possible. Sensors, cameras, etc. mean you need a limited number of guards and react force to handle incursions.

32. Better than the other option
Endless streams of Palestinian terror attacks against Israeli civilians.

Maybe if Israel had a partner in peace that would tackle the terrorists, this wouldn't be needed.

33. You don't live in Israel,
do you. Israel does have a partner in peace that would tackle terrorists, the US, but it's far away. Israel is all alone in a sea of Arabs. It's important to be friendly with your neighbors.

34. No I don't live there
However, I've had neighbors that were thugs before, so I can identify with how Israel feels with Syria, Saudi Arabia, et al nearby.

Sometimes, your neighbors aren't worth getting along with. Sometimes, nothing you can do will satisfy them.

The partner in peace Israel needs is the Palestinians, but they never offer peace. They just make demands.

38. Do you think
it's fair to expect the Palestinian to accept a peace on Israel's terms? Are you suggesting to get rid of the neighbors, "Syria, Saudi Arabia, et al?" Get rid of many people so that a few people can be happy? Isn't it better that all get together and everybody makes concessions?

If Israel can't get along with its neighbors, then one way to stop the friction is to get out of the neighbor's land, but, on the contrary, it seems to me that Israel wants more land, and also force its will on the neighbors! What right does a government have to send the elected leader of another people into exile?

25. Again, agreed
The UN is not perfect but it's the only one we have. I understand there are member countries whose UN representatives ignore parking fines and I think they should reduce the number of cocktail parties, although a lot of business and lobbying goes on there, but it should keep going. Also I think member countries should learn not to ignore UN resolutions.
The WHO, Unicef, etc. are doing good work.
