Qureia condemns attack, says sides must try to end violence By Haaretz Service and Agencies

Palestinian Legislative Council speaker Ahmed Qureia, who has conditionally accepted the nomination for Palestinian Prime Minister, condemned Tuesday's suicide bombing at a bus stop outside an army base near Rishon Letzion, thatclaimed the lives of seven people. "We express our regrets and painfor the innocent lives (lost)as a result of violence and counter-violence," Queria said."Such an act stresses once again the necessity that boththe Palestinian and Israeli leadership ... search for ways to end this killing,” headded. Hamas spokesman Abdel Aziz Rantisi, who survived an Israeli attempt on his life in June, did notclaim responsibility for the attack, but said"this operation, whoever is behind it, is anatural reaction for the bloody aggression against our people, the assassination of our people, the killing of our children, demolishing our houses, and terrorizing our innocent people." Israeli government spokesman Avi Pazner said"the responsibility is shared between the organization that carried out the atrocity and the Palestinian Authority that did nothing to prevent it, and Israel will react accordingly." Speaking at a counterterrorism conference prior to the attack, Gen. Moshe Ya'alon said Tuesday"there is an attempt now to reverse the process" of reform headed by Abbas, put forward a leadership with all paths leading to Arafat and "promote the logic of a temporary cease-fire, instead of an effort to dismantle the terror infrastructure." Ya'alon also hinted Israel could start targeting militant leaders in places from Syria to Lebanon to Iran who support Palestinian terror cells, saying "all leaderships should be held accountable." <snip>

At least seven killed, 14 wounded in Tzrifin suicide bombing By Jonathan Lis, Haaretz Correspondent, Haaretz Service, and Agencies

At least seven people were killed and severalothers were reported wounded Tuesday, six of them seriously, when a suicide bomber blew up just before 6 P.M. at a crowded bus stop adjacent to the Tzrifin military base near Rishon Letzion.Security officials said there were many soldiers at the bus stop. Police investigators have determined that the suicide bomber was a 19-year-oldPalestinian man from Rantis, located in the West Bank. The bomber, who wore civilian clothes and carried a leatherbag containing a two to three kilogram bomb, got out of a car adjacent to the bus stop and blew himself up. Four male soldiers and three female soldiers were killed by the suicide bomber, according toArmy Radio. Cpl. Ayal Schneider, 20, was walking toward thebus stop when he heard the explosion and saw a fireball. "People were running from the bus stop shouting 'bomb! bomb!"' he said. "I saw the bodies, the body parts strewn around, heard the screams, and tried to help," said one witness, who gave his name only as Roy. Police, who were checking the possibility thatthe suicide bomber was a woman, evacuated bystanders from the scene of the attack, fearing additional explosive devices might have been placed there. Police cars chased a vehicle spotted fleeing the site of the bombing shortly after the attack took place. The car was supposedly heading north towards Netanya. Emergency rescue workers at the scene of the attack found the body believed to be that of the bomber. The wounded were evacuated to the nearby AssafHarofeh Hospital, Ichilov Hosptial in Tel Aviv,Wolfson Medical Center in Holon and ShebaMedical Center, Tel Hashomer. "The attack today is further indication that the Palestinian Authority is doing absolutely nothing whatsoever to reign in terrorists or to dismantle the terror infrastructure in their areas," said David Baker, an official in the Prime Minister's Office. The security forces have been on high alert since Israel's failed attempt Saturday to wipe out the top leadership of Hamas, including the radical Islamic movement's spiritual leader. <Snip>
