An Arrest Sets Off a Protest by Orthodox Jews
From New York Times:
http://www.nytimes.com/2006/04/05/nyregion/05protest.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

A routine traffic stop of a 75-year-old Hasidic driver in Brooklyn escalated into a protest last night by hundreds of Orthodox Jews, who surrounded a police station house, chanted "No justice no peace," lighted bonfires and set a police car afire. The driver and two other men were arrested, but no serious injuries were reported.

The reason this is posted here is to compare and contrast the ways Muslims protest, who are often vilified in these parts, and other groups who feel themselves marginalized by society. I am not defending the actions of the New York Police, or even condemning (or necessarily supporting) the actions of the protesters.

My point is that it seems there is not much difference in how people protest. No matter who they are.

1. Religious fundamentalists of ALL stripes are whacked-out crazies
That includes the Chasidics and the Xians and the Muslims.

2. Witnesses said the police were unnecessarily rough with an elderly man
and all this for a cell phone while driving violation.

But your point about the car fire being similiar to car fires in other protests around the world is very true.

3. This is more properly termed a "riot". No matter what the ethnic group...

... was, I find it odd that they called this a "protest". My guess is the Times was just trying to avoid a backlash from jewish groups.

But they burned a police car, for goodness' sake! A riot is a riot. And it's bad no matter who does it, and no matter what incited it.

4. there is a difference.....
if jews all over the world started protesting and burning stuff, you would have a point...this is simply an isolated incident that other jews do not identify with and will not be doing anything about it....

its a local criminal act aided by the guys clan members

5. Sounds like a riot by violent extremists.
Everybody should respect the police, no matter what.
They should all be arrested.

6. I thought it sounded like an act of terror!
Need to review The Patriot Act on this one.
Meanwhile, I'll fire up the Gitmo plane.

10. Locking per I/P guidelines
Inflammatory material that adds nothing to the debate is likely to be locked or deleted.
