Rep. Lynn Woolsey position on AIPAC legislation.
Rep. Lynn Woolsey's recent Washington meeting with a Marin-heavy American Israel Public Affairs Committee delegation produced fireworks. The group asked Woolsey, a Petaluma Democrat, to co-sponsor legislation mandating four prerequisites before the United States. provides financial help to the new Hamas-led Palestinian government: recognize Israel's right to exist, disarm all militias, renounce violence and remove people with terrorist ties from Palestinian security services. Woolsey refused to sign on, calling the legislation strident and hardheaded.

The result was uproar in local Jewish and pro-Israel circles. Yet, Woolsey's firm position will likely gratify her core supporters in the Marin and Sonoma Peace and Justice groups.

Lynn Woolsey has been at the forefront of leading congressional efforts to end the illegal war of agression against Iraq. I am glad that she is also opposing this very strident and illogical legislation.

That legislation is HR 4681

In summary, it punishes Palestinian civilians for participating in democratic elections.

1. Specifically,
what do the Berkeley-Piedmont-Oakland Peace and Justice Students find wrong with

"recognize Israel's right to exist,
"disarm all militias,
"renounce violence
"remove people with terrorist ties from Palestinian security services

Notice that is "militias" and not "police" or "security forces."

2. Only the first is acceptable.

Israel has as much right to exist as any state.

The Palestinians should not be required to disarm themselves anymore than anyone else. A militia is simply one form of citizens armed force, and there is nothing wrong with it, as such. The question, as with the IDF, is what is done with it.

The Palestinians have as much right to "defend themselves" as anyone else, hence have as much right to "use violence" as anyone else.

The last is babble, "terrorist ties" according to whom? It is an infringement of Palestinian sovereignty to even suggest they may not chose whom they like. Do you propose to give the Palestinian government control over who may be in Israeli security services?
